Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

I enjoyed the Last Jedi quite a bit!

Not sure what people are complaining it...these are fairy tales for children, and they work perfectly fine that way. If you go in complaining about things like ridiculous space physics, it ain't for you.

Some really great set pieces...the last movie, I thought Adam Driver was the weak link, but he stepped up in this one.

The beginning was kind of a mish-mash of jokes that were okay, but not very Star Wars like. But then it settled into its usual myth-building and earnestness.

It was really cool to see Carrie Fischer and Mark Hamil on the screen together.

New edition
Spoiler:
Benico del Toro
was great and I hope we see more of him. I really liked the new character of Rose.

Great fun.

The Netflix original Neo Yokio (which is probably a Dadaist masterpiece and you should watch it - it's not the teen anime it looks like) is at 30%. F RT and the people who still pay it heed.

Well my theatre was mostly all clapping as the credits rolled and my friends I went with loved it... Made me feel like the old man in the room when I was the only one who said I was disappointed. Once the fanboy hype dies down though I'm sure this will be regarded as a pretty terrible film. Not even talking about fan/lore stuff the script and plot is just really bad. Zero character development. Finn's "arc" if you can even call it that is completely pointless. Probably would've been better if he wasn't even in the movie. 2.5 hour film and basically nothing has changed by the end of it except Rey levelled up her force powers by sitting on a rock with Luke for a couple days and diving into a random dark hole?

No new memorable music (again) was very disappointing as well. The new planets they went to sucked... the casino was kind of cool for the minute it was on screen before it turned into a completely random animal rescue mission?

End of the rant for now... there was overall great acting and some cool cinematography but that's not gonna make up for everything else being completely awful.

I just had higher hopes for a main entry Star Wars than being popcorn Marvel fare. I feel the original trilogy goes far beyond "fairy tales for children"... I just felt this movie had the worst of both worlds... tried to rip off the Marvel humor way too heavily and felt super out of place at times, and a plot that was just bloated and meaningless and tried to take itself way too seriously for what it actually pulled off.

And I thought there were some good set pieces but others left much to be desired. I mean the fianle on that mining planet is just the most boring/generic place ever.

Thought Star Wars: The Last Jedi was pretty bad, often approaching levels of being comically bad.
12-15-2017 , 06:21 AM
anyone who uses Rotten Tomatoes seriously needs a good anti-psychotic.
12-15-2017 , 08:23 AM
Last Jedi was a steaming pile... about what I expected.
12-15-2017 , 08:50 AM
This is very disappointing! Why do people think TLJ so bad? I was hoping that Rian Johnson would inject some originality into Star Wars and take it in a new direction, and reviews suggested that he has done so.

Film snobbing it up ldo

Doubt anyone goes into a Star Wars movie with a film-snob attitude (other than Richard Brody from the New Yorker), that would be pointless. We perhaps want more depth and originality than purely mindless entertainment, but surely no-one is expecting Ibsen-like psychological insight or philosophical musings.

meh I don't get it. I get that children like the originals. To me there's a huge difference between:
Spoiler:

R2-D2 zapping a bad guy and BB-88 commanding an ATST and mowing down stormtroopers for comedy.

Or that alien lady from Force Awakens comically flying around giving the lowdown on a code break on space Monaco. Imagine Han and Luke video chatting with Greedo while he's in the middle of a starfight in order to get some imperial codes to land on Endor. it's horribly campy and non-serious in a way that the originals were not

It's bad because it's completely out of sync with every other film in the franchise. Rose was also the worst character since Jar Jar.

Lol if you say so

It’s a Star Wars Movie. Don’t take it so serious. They are on the level of an Avengers movie.
12-15-2017 , 05:50 PM
Casual fans and kids will love that type of film because the cinematography is great and there's plenty of action scenes, Luke Skywalker could break into a macarena and you'd think it was fine.
12-15-2017 , 06:22 PM
lol Dude, I saw the original in the theater 13 times on the first release. I was 13. No one loves the first three films more than me. But I don't expect a new Star Wars film to give me the same feeling I had then now that I'm 54.

The Last Jedi is really no different than Return of the Jedi, in terms of tone, humor, and ridiculous scenarios.

You all should be happy that this film doesn't hinge on the heroes having to find a flaw in a gigantic round thing in the sky that they have to blow up. Again.

I posted this in OOT but:

1. The Rotten Tomatoes, MetaCritic, etc. professional critical views are very high
2. On the other hand, the Rotten Tomatoes audience score is the lowest for any live action Star Wars movie

This is obviously not very scientific.

3. On the lesser known third hand:

Quote:
ComScore/Screen Engine reports a mindblowing five-out-of-five stars for the movie and a 90% overall positive with an 82% definite recommend. Forty five percent said that the Rian Johnson-directed movie came in above their expectations while close to 40% said they’ll the movie again in the theater.
The CinemaScore is also very positive.

These are professional survey / market research firms where everyone surveyed gets one vote, is guaranteed to have seen the movie, etc. and are therefore more 'scientific' than internet ratings.

What I see emerging: many fan boys (I count myself in this group) viewing it very negative for various reasons. They are taking their wrath to twitter, reddit, forums, etc. and hammering the scores down on RT and Flixter, etc. Some obviously like it.

Casual audience and critics rating it very highly.

Went out and saw 3 Billboards

I thought it was good with some really great dialog and strong performances. But ultimately I think it will be a very forgettable movie. It was entertaining and well done but it doesn't seem like one of those movies I will ever want to watch again or be raving about in 3 years or even 3 weeks.

I am really surprised at those RT scores. I would expect the fanboys to be giving it 90+ since the people that see it opening night love everything Star Wars.

The Circle is out on Amazon Prime. It's a bad movie and I wouldn't recommend it, mostly because it's so predictable and a bit boring.

The only odd part, and it's odd as in odd, not odd as in engaging

Spoiler:
The movie is set up like a normal anti tech warning movie, but the ending makes it seem like she thought removing all privacy was the way to fix the hypocrisy of Tom Hanks and the coda makes it seem like that was the moral of the story. In that sense it made it seem like a morality tale told from the future where there is no privacy and everyone scoffs at the idea of privacy like the present day is the dark ages

Star Wars The Last Jedi, when it's doing good Star Wars stuff it's really good when it's not, it's pretty meh. Also the middle portion of the movie has a pretty terrible subplot (Finn/Rose) that drags and almost takes down the entire movie with how boring and unnecessary it is. The movie does end strong with the final third, Riann Johnson's cinematography was absolutely mesmerizing in certain scenes and Mark Hammill was pretty ****ing awesome throughout. Thought it was better than the Force Awakens but there were times when I was wondering if some of the prequel movies were better...Still overall a good movie IMO

I think I will stick with vintage Samurai movies... space operas, not so much.

The guys I went with loved star wars... nearly everyone I have had a personal conversation with loves it. I hated it, which means it will probably make a billion dollars.

I get doms point, and I agree with the fact that it's intended as mindless entertainment... I think my point, it doesn't need to be. Show business.

Your Name - Anime about a country girl and city lad who find themselves randomly waking up in the other's body. Beautifully animated and drawn, the depiction of the scenery is almost lifelike. This almost reduced me to a blubbery mess by the end, which never happens to me.

Not a movie I think I'll ever watch again due to the content but I'll be raving about it forever.

Thanks for the reminder. I've been meaning to watch it since BJ was in posting about it.
