Scanners has a phone booth scene.

I can think of a ton of movies that have a phone booth scene, with the obvious one being the movie called 'Phone Booth' (lol).

Superman and the Matrix movies we're the others that quickly came to mind.

I hadn't even heard of the movie 'Local Hero' until now.

Local Hero is amazing and always in my top 5 movies ever

Just watched Lady Snowblood.

Wow! Fantastic and lots of fun. Loved the style and back and forth narrative.

This is kind of hard to find. The basis for the kill bill bride, right?

The follow up isn't nearly as good

Just saw Kansas City Confidential for the first time. Holy cow, what a great movie. This is what "hard-boiled" is all about. And Coleen Gray was one beautiful woman.

Only God Forgives is Drive in the Black Lodge, how is it not awesome?

So no not an empirical fact, merely an opinion.

I'm guessing you haven't done a science degree. It would be a pretty hard word to avoid but then everyone has these common words they don't know or have somehow blanked. You will probably see it loads of times in the next few months. Baader meinhof phenomenon and all that.

True, but the sequel gets better on subsequent viewings. They get shown regularly on TCM as a double feature.

Watched a couple of good under-the-radar movies recently.

Good Time - A bank robber attempts to keep his autistic brother out of prison after a botched bank job. High energy thriller and pretty intense in parts. I really enjoyed it.

James White - An aimless young man tries to find direction while coping with his mother's cancer after the death of his father. Engrossing movie with powerful performances, but certainly don't watch it if you're looking for something uplifting.

Would definitely recommend both if they sound at all interesting to you.

Stand By Me - I think this was the first time I saw it in full. It's okay, a better movie than other '80s kid "classic" The Goonies for sure. But I like to focus on the negative, so:

It has what I describe as "forced nostalgia" that I've seen other movies do. It "forces" it with its flashback structure, with musical choices that are selected specifically to make you wistful about the '60s (mostly sad tunes), and with kids who are "wise" beyond their years about aging and death and the dissolution of childhood friendships. You don't need any of that; the movie still would feel nostalgic, and would be improved imo, if you removed those elements. An authentic-feeling '60s setting with a decent story is enough to evoke nostalgia on its own.

When we see that one of these 12 year olds is quite smart and others are not, it's apparent that the smart one has a good chance of "making it" out of that town while the others do not. This does not need to be explicitly vocalized by the children, and it harms the movie for them to do so.

There's also this closing "resonant" line about how you never again have friends like you had when you were 12. Uh, no? Sounds like something a dysfunctional adult who writes in his office alone all day would think though.

It (2017) - Strong. One of the scarier traditional horror movies I'm aware of. The clown is great and an interesting character; not just another boring ole' clown like I expected.

The whole ending is wayyyy better than the garbage that's in the book and TV miniseries (I've read/seen both) and it's the main reason I give it a solid recommendation. During most of the movie I was lukewarm on it and was getting irritated about the logic of It's rules. This is largely washed away by the ending.

Looking forward to the next one.

Allied is on Amazon Prime. I'd give it a 6/10.

Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard just don't have much chemistry and the entire motivation of the movie depends on that chemistry so by the time the spy thriller stuff kicks in you don't care too much.

But I thought he cheated on Angelina with her...

I haven't read the book or seen the TV version so, have nothing to compare it to and watched this as a stand alone movie.

I personally didn't find it to be very scary at all and was left feeling like the whole movie had been toned down in order to cater for a wider audience eg: Kids. I guess I was left feeling like it was a missed opportunity and overall could have been a lot better than it was.

I'm not saying it's a bad movie, it's definitely 'watchable'; it's just not a memorable one for me that, I would highly recommend to people.

Lady Bird

High School Movie: check.

Sacramento: check.

Parochial School: check.

Prom: check.

First sex: check.

In-crowd/out-crowd: check.

The high-school-teen-angst movie has stood at the apex of American film making since the end of WWII, and Lady Bird may be the best of the lot. But I'm not sure it will find much of an audience: no grody gross-out scenes, no gang fights, not even a car chase. Still, it is so realistic that it is compelling. By all means, check it out.

"Six inches for Jesus!"

Loved the new Thor movie, and was wondering who the hell the director was that came up on the end credits.

Lo and behold....the Kiwi who did Hunt for the Wilderpeople!

What a stroke of brilliance by Marvel. Love that they're willing to mix things up and take risks with directors/scripts. That easily could've been Josh Trank 2.0.
