Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

Watched the Spielberg documentary on HBO. A little long but well worth watching if you're a fan of his films. 7/10

Also watched an indy movie called Blue Jay with Marc Duplass and Sarah Paulson. Very small-scale, 2-character movie. Interesting film about regret and nostalgia and choices made when we're young. Duplass is not my favorite but he was pretty good in this. Paulson was fantastic and really carries the movie. It's on Netflix, worth checking out, 7/10.

von Trier's Antichrist was very good.

+1 to this. His movies are great even if he is a dick.

Ah,but does it?

If he is flawed, does it transfer to his directorial style in how he views relationships between men and women?

Or his choice of subject matter in his films?

And do we punish filmakers and artists who step across the line by boycotting their work?

IMO Von Trier's Breaking the Waves(1996) has one of the top ten greatest actress (Emily Watson) performances in cinema history. grade A

+1 for Breaking The Waves.

Interesting discussion about top directors and sexual harassment etc.

Hitchcock fits in there too, as does Polanski (who went further than sexual harassment of course), both from eras when no one felt able to speak out.

Bogdanovich married the younger sister of his murdered former girlfriend actress, about 30 years younger than him.

Let's not talk about creepy Woody Allen.

There must be many film moguls and directors from the golden age of Hollywood who would also fit, whose behaviour we don't know about.

While some people might be bothered with the slow pacing of the movie I really dig slow burn type movies/ tv shows and despite the movie nearly three hours I never really felt bored because there were so many things to look at on screen. Can't wait to go back and see it again in IMAX a few more times.
all of this. this movie was visually stunning. the elvis part, the sex sync part and the bubble girl part, were out of this world. that's how you ****ing do special effects. it was unlike anything i've ever seen. i was in a daze for about an hour after seeing this film. i didn't want to go back into this world.

New just released 4k remaster by Criterion of Barry Lyndon... finally justice to this masterpiece.

You can really see the analog aspects of the movie in this transfer from the original camera negative... along with the softness of many of the lenses used to capture the existing light shooting Kubrick did in this movie in an effort to maintain period feel.

A new 5.1 soundtrack is also mixed in this offering that was derived from the monoaural original.

I stayed away from this movie for so long. When I finally watched it, I sat without moving, mesmerized.

^three hours plus... Barry Lyndon takes an invest in time from a viewer, which I fully appreciate. It's very much like watching a moving still life painting. When I go to a museum or art gallery, I can spend hours just looking at paintings while starring into them endlessly... others merely glance at the beautiful works of art while motoring off onto some new sensation.

Next up... brand new Criterion 4k release Fire Come Walk With Me.

Florida Project

Huck Finn: washes up in the Magic Kingdom.

Pappy: an out of work stripper.

Bad Kids! no spitting.

Fire bugs: at least they're not spitting.

Pastels: bed bugs.

Creep in the playground: from Cherry Hill.

Florida Man: does good.

No harm: no fowl.

The American Dream: Escape!

Definitely check this one out.

Got around to seeing Scarlett Johansson in Ghost in the Shell.

Not too bad, had no idea of the source material, but it wasn't too confusing to me.

Couple of eye rolls but basically a decent action flick.

Watched Bladerunner again in preparation for BR2049. I like it better ever time I watch it.

Pretty disappointed to see that The Snowman is getting very poor early reviews.

+1 for Breaking the Waves. Saw this movie probably 6 years ago and it still sticks with me to this day. As with all his films, certainly not for everyone, especially the faint of heart.

BladeRunner- meh. Visually amazing as others have said, but plot itself didn't do it for me. The payoff in the end did nothing for me. Didn't have the least bit of an emotional investment in either character, only really cared about K.

When I saw reviews saying the movie was too long, I initially thought that's not a valid criticism for a money. A director should be able to tell whatever story they want. Then I saw this movie and it was 45 minutes too long. There has to be at least 20 minutes of just Ryan Gosling walking. Also, I'd have to rewatch, but I don't feel like the Jared Leto scenes really do much to advance the plot either.

Haven't seen Breaking the Waves but I'll put it on my list. Loved Melancholia. Hated Nymphomaniac.

The Jared Leto scenes are key to the whole thing. Also as for not caring, the whole movie is setting you up to care when the question is why should we. That's almost the point of the movie.

Its helpful to think of BR 2049 as a movie about humans rather than a movie about AI.

I do wish one of these days we can have a movie that portrays AI like what it could truly be in say 30 years time but it would likely be indecipherable.

One of the hardest things to do whether in novels or movies is to have a good portrayal of superhuman intelligence.

Why isn't there a BR2049 thread?

^^^^^^^^

Prisoners
Enemy
Sicario
Arrival
BR: 2049

He could retire now and that would already be one hell of a legacy.

Haven't seen the first two but loved the last 3 on that list. Didn't know those we're all him. What's his next movie?

Also, I wish there was a bunch more Jared Leto scenes in B2049R. Think there was more to explore there and Leto was real good in those few minutes of screen time. He crushed the hardest in that short the director commissioned.
