watched Sleuth a couple of nights ago (the 1972 one, not the remake). thought it was fantastic! the third act certainly dragged (basically from the point of the big moment and onwards) but the dialog was generally so snappy and quirky that I didn't care. It was also a tad long at 2hrs 19mins but Caine + Olivier are just spectacular

I like Reeves. I won't say he's an amazing actor, cuz tbh he's not. But Reeves puts himself in movies I enjoy. Bill & Ted, Point Break, Chain Reaction, Devils Advocate, The Matrix, Constantine, and the Private Lives of Pippa Lee are all good. I'm not exactly sure if it's because Reeves plays the lead role, or if it's the storyline... probably a mixture of both.

Does he deserve to have such huge success in his life? Does he deserve to be on the A list? Is he extremely good at what he does? I don't know, I'm not the person to judge on that... and I think that's what a lot of people get hung up about over Reeves. They look at him, say ehhhh he's ok, or he's bad or whatever, but then they look at his success in life and kinda scratch their heads.

For me, he's kinda similar to Nicholas Cage in the sense that while every movie might not be a blockbuster/ rotten tomato, he's put himself in some movies I enjoy, and I respect that.

Yeah, you got a point by comparing Keanu Reeves to Nicholas Cage : both are overrated, and both have been in decent movies. Cage though is an actor that many people was GREAT in quite a few movies, so he does distance himself frome Reeves... Movies that he was amazing like

- Adaptation
- Bringing Out the Dead
- The Good Lieutenant
- Leaving Las Vegas
- Wild at Heart

and I might be forgetting one...

Now You See Me

First, a couple caveats. Saw this at a friends' house since my place is being worked on. (Pretty sure this was a pirated copy btw, as the movie doesn't appear to be on DVD yet). They have an incredibly hyper greyhound that will jump up on the couch right by you. Very possible my mood that day and the distractions affected my experience.

With that being out of the way, I'm still pretty sure this movie sucked ass. Ok let me start with the basics.

Synopsis and cast (no major spoilers): The plot was pretty simple. 4 magicians are assembled under mysterious circumstances to form some super magic show. During these shows, they commit crimes as part of their live act, for example robbing a bank across the world. The FBI and others know they did it but can't seem to prove it.

Mark Ruffalo is an FBI on the case and looks like Vincent D'Onofrio on a bender. Melanie Laurant is some green Interpol agent attached to him to assist somehow but not really useful. Morgan Freeman plays a character who makes DVD specials spoiling how magic tricks are performed, and consults to help, sort of.

The main four in the show are Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg--nevermind, unimportant. They all suck in this. Freeman is himself in a forgettable role. The underrated Laurant in her meaningless role is probably the highlight of the film. She is actually, not even probably. She'll get a lot more work but hopefully better than this.

Review part

What a POS.

The story is lame. Did nothing for me, attempts at twists were dumb, convoluted, and didn't pay off. It was also kind of unrealistic and they were using CG to sell what were supposed to be magic tricks. Not just a little bit either, which I would understand, but I couldn't buy any of them as magicians or any of their tricks as real. Just all very phony.

The cinematography was incredibly annoying and distracting. Every time the four magicians took the stage you get all of these wide-angle shots with cameras orbiting around all the action as if you're flying around it. They did this a lot. See a trailer for the movie and you'll get an idea. The camera hardly ever seems to stop moving. You get a fair batch of lens flares that would embarrass JJ Abrams. While that's happening, the magicians are doing these cheesy presentation lines, one at a time, actor by actor. It was like a bad school play.

The very end is so ridiculous I'm fighting the temptation to spoil it just save people their time.

D. And I'm being generous I think. Smokin' Aces was a better movie. I can only imagine it's semi-ok audience reviews (72% audience on RT) must be coming from a teenage crowd. To sum it up, I'd say it was shallow, brainless, annoying and strictly for Gen-Y kiddies.

I still want to see NYSM despite all these bad reviews. It had such a great premise. Decent actors. Trailers looked good. I'll probably watch it just to figure out how they went so badly wrong.

I was thinking Woody Harrelson and Morgan Freeman. Is Harrelson not considered a good actor? He's been fantastic in some roles. Haven't seen Eisenberg in enough but he seems to have potential from The Social Network. Ruffalo is alright too. Dave Franco, hard to tell, always seems to play the same role.

Edit: Obviously Caine is great, though not sure he has a big role here.

eh... not looking for an argument.

Shawshank Redemption

Yup. Still great.

Gonzirra nailed it with his review.

Save yourself the time. The movie's not even bad enough to laugh at. It's just a complete waste of 2 hrs.

Haven's seen it yet, but the reviews are interesting because in the screenwriting blog/Internet world (and by extension the Industry, to some degree) was absolutely raving about that script before it was made. It was constantly touted all over the place as an example of the perfect spec script. People were raving about it. And then....

It happens so many times: a script is heralded as the second coming and then the movie is a turd. You should have seen the buzz for HappyThankYouMorePlease before that was produced. It just further accentuates the mysteries of making a good movie. Good filmmaking is often so nebulous....

I thought it was instantly forgettable and thoroughly mediocre but not awful.

Life of Pi

Reasonably ok story, though well-made movie. The main two who played Pi did a god job. I enjoyed the ride well enough but it wasn't the kind of movie I'd rave about and I wouldn't want to sit through it again. You're not missing anything special if you skip it.

It has some charm but I'd have liked it more if I were 13.

B+

I really enjoyed the visual aspect of the movie. I thought it was a delight to watch, even though I didn't see it in 3d. Not great, but definitely entertaining and a most for anyone that likes fantasy.

7.8/10
