It's Glover (playing Friend). PS its not a joke, he means it IMO. Friend is my favourite character btw

oh right..yeah i realize he was serious. I just thought it was funny. especially when the other guy replied something to the effect of
Spoiler:
I would have had more respect for you if you told me sooner

He was a solid character. I'm a toss-up between Friend and O'Neil. Maybe an obvious choice but Smiley is so freaking good.

It's an interesting movie. First watch, I felt it was deeper than I could take in on one watch. I looked forward to the second watch. Second watch, I got no more out of it, other than enjoying the things I like the first time even more. But it didn't feel as deep as i thought. But hell, my mind keeps going back to it the way you keep going back to pick a scab you know you should leave alone to heal.

Ii always feel a movie that is sticky in this way must be great on some level.

Very interested on the thoughts on some other loungers on it. Want to also discuss the sound design in the new thread.

Also, I will watch a third time tonight.

Mud

For some reason I'm having a hard time rating this movie exactly. I enjoyed watching it but it's not the type of movie that will leave much of an impression. Matthew McConaughey as good in this as anything I've seen him in, and the cast of good characters are interesting (kids remind me of Stand by Me kids a little). Antagonists are pretty empty and barely in the film. Michael Shannon has a decent character but is equally underused to the point where I'm not sure what his purpose in the movie was.

There's depth and everything but the last act doesn't seem to do justice to the rest of the film. With that factored in I think the story is just fairly good when it could have been excellent, and it is told and acted very well. Beautifully set and had a Mark Twain vibe going on a little bit.

It doesn't completely collapse or anything and it works well enough so I don't want to beat up on it, but I can't honestly say that I enjoyed it more than a decent action or sci-fi movie. The couple of spots that should have had an impact just felt flat. The focus shifts off of a key character and the movie feels like it changes to a coming of age story. Two-thirds through the film I might have called it an A, just couldn't close the deal when all was done. MM takes his shirt off go figure, everything goes to hell.

Would definitely watch for more from this director/writer, great start for him between this and Take Shelter. When and if he puts it all together for his magnum opus that's going to be a hell of a movie. He seems better at telling the story than writing one, maybe a little help there could do it.

B+

Thanks for the recommendations guiz. Needed something fast as my little brother were gonna stay with me for a couple of ours. We watched The Croods and it was decent, although I fell asleep towards the end.

going through the pusher trilogy

pusher 2 completely different movie than the first pusher , the story is better thought out ,it's slower paced and much more polished .Mads Mikkelsen (villain from casino royale) was great in the lead as a lowlife druggie trying to pull his life together .

you can see Nicolas Winding Refn love of colors come out in this movie ,the movie is mostly shot in neon green and neon red lighting interchanging from scene to scene and even for a low budget movie its pretty cool to look at .

im not sure which pusher i like better , theres a certain charisma about the first one and its raw energy but the second movie is probably the better movie all-around technically / storywise , acting .etc .

Hahahaha....that was pretty awesome, Busto. Thanks!

Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa

Snob, chauvinist, xenophobe, sycophant, Alan Partridge might be worst candidate for hostage negotiator ever but that's what he finds himself doing when his radio station Norwich FM is taken over by distraught colleague Pat Farrell.

The history of sitcom to movie adaptations isn't a good one. Half an hours light entertainment usually fails to translate into a couple of hours of comedy drama but Partridge is an unusually well rounded comedy character and so are his colleagues.
The scope of the film is sensible kept small, mostly happing inside radio Norwich's studios allowing Partridge to show the sort of narrow minded crass stupidity and self interested toadying that made his sitcom outings so intensely funny.
Having said that I only once found myself cracking up in the way the TV episodes never fail to make me guffaw but then I was watching it in a near empty cinema and I think everyone felt a little self conscious about laughing out load, instead I steadily chuckled to myself throughout.

I'll be interested to hear what Americans make of it I'm not sure Partridge made an impact over there the way David Brent did and he's the epitome of a mail reading, middle-class, middle-aged middlebrow, little Englander so maybe it wont translate.

Down Terrace, I enjoyed this flick. I laughed a lot. Garvey has a funny bit when he talks about the night he got his wife pregnant. Extremely dark film, Ben Wheatley is pretty twisted! I can't wait to see Sightseers.

Watched Project X yesterday. What a whack movie. Where the hell did they find all those gorgeous girls that was willing to show their tits? Also a lot of good songs in it.

No, do not watch it unless you are still in your teens and want a cheap version of American Pie...

How about Smiley bringing his kid to a job? And the old lady at the bus stop. LOL.

If you like dark Brit drama, try and dig out the Red Riding trilogy. It was made for TV, but it's fantastic. Get on a format with subtitles, the accents are very thick.

Smiley telling that guy not to take his kid in another room, I couldn't stop laughing. The bus stop took me by surprise, that was crazy! Think I'll revisit Kill List again soon.

I'll look into that show. Think I may have seen it on Netflix.

Haha, i forgot about Smiley basically implying the guy might be a pedo. You got me wanting to watch Sightseers again. My favourite Wheatley movie.

The woman in it, Tina, in some shots look really attractive to me, and in others she looks one sandwich short of a picnic. She's an interesting actress.

The Human Centipede

Wow. That was gross. Nothing more to say, really.

Watched Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home for the first time since I was a kid. Great flick, I forgot how funny it was. The parts on earth remind me of the less serious episodes of the original series, which is awesome. The plot is about humpback whales and time travel and may or may not make any sense, but it doesn't matter. I would have to think this sits as second best in the Star Trek filmography, just below The Wrath of Khan.

5/5 stars

I saw as a kid, but do not remember anything from it... Just watched Star Trek Into Darkness yesterday ; enjoyed it a lot, it is solid, but not as good as the Star Trek, the reboot.

Star Trek 8/10
Star Trek Into Darkness 7.5/10

I will definitely revisit the older movies though...

Yeah, it's basically ****, the acting is ****, the filming is ****, the plot is terri****, it didn't bore me to death, that's the only redeeming feature it has.

it's hard to say Kick Ass 2 is COMPLETELY derivative... but in totality it's not nearly as satisfying a film as the original Kick Ass.

Still, there are completely hilarious parts to the movie that make it worth the effort to see and Jim Carey could have carried this movie solely on his own shoulders based on his preparation and performance. unfortunately his part, while integral, is some what small and merely noteworthy.

Not sure I can sit through this one again and again like I could with KA1... which is a shame, because there are small sections in the movie that are classic.

I've got a soft spot for that movie... but it's so "lite", there is no way it could ever register anywhere near a "best of" list in relation to the entire series of ST movies.

Still, whenever it's on TV I always seem to watch it.
08-16-2013 , 06:11 PM
I always think of Star Trek 4 as the last in a mini inner trilogy of ST movies, that started with Wrath of Khan. 2,3 and 4 seem to have the same look, feel and ethos to them.
08-16-2013 , 06:34 PM
and they are basically one continual storyline... so then there's that

I dont know why it is... but even with all it's flaws and technical limitations... specially in the middle portion of the movie, I still think Star Trek: the Motion Picture is pure science fiction gold. the other movies play like Macbeth or like some light hearted travel picture, but ST:TMP is deeply rooted in what I like to call Pure Science Fiction.

I really love that movie.

Movie tonight, what do you think? (probably haven't heard of a couple of them)

Elysium
The Act of Killing
Adjust your tracking
Blackfish
The Shining (would be a lock, but it's a midnight showing and I'm old and that's late)
Ain't them bodies saints
