I have two administrative assistants. I'm the chair of a large English department with nearly 200 full time faculty, adjuncts, and staff that serve about 9,000 students a semester. They make my work life much easier.

Maybe not one of the worst films, but a great graphic novel. Perhaps the better the source, the worse the film version will seem.

Strong film. Final half hour was fantastic.
The Conformist is a must see.

The Fountain is masterful, my favorite soundtrack by far.

Also excellent:

The Departed
The Last Samurai
Inception
Sunshine
Battlestar Galactica (It's a TV show, but the music is excellent. Here is another favorite)
Lord of the Rings (again, cerebral)

I may be a little hyperbolic but the film disrespected its source material and Leonard Cohen. Those are both unforgivable.

Yeah, that's a deadly combination.

Great movie scores:

The Adventures of Robin Hood
The Exorcist
Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters
Once Upon a Time in the West
Vertigo
(and many others by Bernard Herrmann)
Lawrence of Arabia
The Magnificent Seven
Modern Times

And a lesser known Morricone: Battle of Algiers.

If you're the kind of fan who can't get enough "Star Wars," Disney has just made the announcement you've been dreaming of.

In a presentation Wednesday at CinemaCon(in las vegas), the annual meeting of the National Theater Owners Association, Disney representatives unveiled some big plans for the "Star Wars" franchise after purchasing Lucasfilm for $4 billion. While it's well known that "Star Wars: Episode VII" is in the works and poised for release in the summer of 2015, Disney is saying after that, fans can expect a new "Star Wars" movie every summer for at least five years, with installments in the official series alternating with stand-alone films that will focus on well-loved characters in the "Star Wars" universe.

That means six "Star Wars" movies between 2015 and 2020.

Don't understand the hate for Sucker Punch. Well, I do, since it's not my kind of movie, but at least it was way more interesting than Snyder's other movies. Or, while not liking it, I also found it sort of interesting when I watched it. I think I need to rewatch it.

Watched The Pope of Greenwich Village recently which was a curious movie. Not especially good perhaps, but goofy and likeable, with some awesome overacting by Eric Roberts.

What are some complaints you guys had about Watchmen? I never read the graphic novel but quite enjoyed watching it in the theater. It was probably the world/characters I enjoyed most though and don't really recall much of the plot. I usually have somewhat picky tastes in movies though and find myself agreeing with a lot of the opinions here.

Here's what I said about Wathmenwhen it first came out. The rest of the thread is also an interesting discussion on the film.

One if the great graphic novels got turned into a fantastically good movie recently - The Dark Knight Returns

I only teach one course; that helps. And the majority of my posting occurs late night or early morning. Today's schedule: meeting at noon; meeting at two, and write a report on how we use room space on four campuses. I have to leave for work soon.

I liked Watchmen and never read the novel, but could you spoiler what you mean if it's not too much work? Thanks.

I liked Sucker Punch too, it does fall during the non battle scenes and the last battle scene has A LOT of slo-mo but there are some great scenes.

The Watchmen is 90% tone and 10% plot. Snyder's film is 99% plot and 1% tone. He totally missed the point. Nearly every tonal point from the novel is totally missed in the film, or often reversed. It's as if Snyder has never heard of metaphor or subtext.

I would bet he thinks "two roads diverged in a yellow wood" refers to two actual roads!

His use of Hallelujah might be the single worst use of music in film history. It's a song about a biblical traitor. Snyder thinks its about yelling "oh god" at climax.

pfffff hater! HATER! I DO WHAT I WANT!

in other news, Oblivion is a waste of ****ing time. Boring, no stakes, painfully long and steals from a long list of other sci-fi films. There is a lot of unintentional comedy too. Many scenes made me laugh and I looked around with the, "oh wait I wasn't supposed to laugh." But hey it looked nice!

Does it deserve that much hate?
