Not to derail (more than we already are), but check Justin Bartha out in Holy Rollers. Pretty solid flick where he plays a Hasidic Jew drug dealer. Jesse Eisenberg is the lead.

Not to derail the derail, but Hasidic Jews I knew took acid on Purim.

Dirty Work

Two Guys (Norm MacDonald and Artie Lange) start a revenge for hire business.

Comedies that are basically one long SNL skit can go very wrong, but this one is highly recommended.

Trance

One of those movies at the Redbox where you don't know any of the actors (aside from Rosario Dawson) and a fairly nondescript summary, but you decide to take a gamble on it because, hey, it's only a dollar right? Zero expectations. Then what you see is a pretty enthralling and complex thriller about an art heist gone wrong. It's very off-the-rails, and borderline far-fetched at times, but entertaining (imo). And you get to see Rosario Dawson FULL-FRONTAL naked. Which is nice.

Watch Get Shorty, then watch Be Cool. Then, you'll see why. If it weren't related to Get Shorty, it would still be bad, but because it is, it's worse. Kind of like how if Mission: Impossible II weren't a Mission: Impossible movie, it would have been a really good movie. But, since it was, it was flat out terrible.

Context means a lot when considering sequels. A bad sequel in the same universe isn't a big deal. A movie that doesn't match the universe makes for a really bad sequel.

I'm not sure if a lot of people will agree, but The Secret Life of Walter Mitty blew my expectations away. I was fully ready for it to be pretty bad, and it was probably one of the best movies I saw all year.

No way! This movie was great, but also should've been great. Bill Murray as a crazy patient who crashes his shrink's vacation, and only the shrink knows that Murray is crazy, while the rest of the town loves him. That sounds like a great concept, and it totally worked. Don't think it belongs in this thread.

Point Break

Johnny Utah, ex college QB turned FBI agent will be going undercover as a surfer to infiltrate a gang of righteous surf dudes who rob banks to fund their never ending summer. Will he bring them in? Or will he be seduced by their radical lifestyle?

They made this movie, and it worked.

A lot of the acting and some of the directing in that movie is really lol, but it's definitely in my top 5 movies I ever had to deal with (had to watch it like 10 times or more during the work I had to do on it).

Believe it or not, having to watch a movie 10 times while working with it can make even some of the best movies be tedious. Three examples of movies I never tired of were Point Break, The Falcon and the Snowman, and Heat (didn't have to watch that one as much). They're also movies that I could have on in the background at any time.

In that movie, a bunch of scientists have to drill to the center of the earth to set off a big ass bomb to save the world. Along the way they encounter hard things to drill through, more hard things to drill through, some quality time outside the big drill, special effects that left a lot to be desired, and virtually no suspense. Did I mention that I hated The Core.

Sunshine is the same friggin' plot basically. A bunch of scientists go in a spacecraft to the sun to set off a big ass bomb to save the earth. It's gonna make no scientific sense, and in the first five minutes, we have the computer tell one of the crew members that he's not allowed to look at the sun because it will make him go blind.

What follows is actually a fairly effective movie. While there are a few cliche moments about environmental obstacles to overcome in completing their journey, most of the obstacles come in the form of psychological and ethical ones. These dilemmas have always been way more interesting (watch the original Solaris if you want the ultimate exploration of this topic), especially in action/special effects movies. I was able to completely get enveloped in the story, suspend my disbelief to the ridiculousness that was going on, and enjoy the ride. It didn't hurt that Danny Boyle directed it, and that Cillian Murphy was fantastic. I would've liked a little more character development towards the beginning to appreciate some of the decisions/sacrifices that were made, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed this flick.
If they changed the strange ending this would be great great movie. The score fit perfectly as well.

Got this to watch with my Mom because Redbox had nothing else that wouldn't offend her or make me want to claw my own eyes out. We both really enjoyed it.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

I was assuming this was just going to be a dumb stoner movie but it was hilarious from the get go.

Raising Arizona

Austin Powers

Figured this would be a dumb Sat Night Live movie. Thought it was great.

Austin Powers was great when it came out. I watched it last December again, and while still hilarious in parts, it does not hold up at all.

Raising Arizona, on the other hand, holds up amazingly well.
