My Pick Six is in Neo-noir: one of the Cohen Brothers best and their first- Blood Simple. Saw this baby when it first hit the screens all those years ago. Great stuff, full of blood and money, and sex, and sleazy characters and double crosses and general debauchery. The only characters more sleazy than the Blood Simple Brood are the people in this draft. Hit him again with the shovel!

Picks So Far So Good:

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1) Scifi
Psycho (2) Hitchcock
The Seven Samurai (3) The Jap Guy
Some Like it Hot (4) Billy Boy
Finding Nemo(5) Animation
Blood Simple(6) Neo-noir

Ending scene:

I have only seen 2 of his movies, this one and 7 Samurai. And I haven't seen this one in many decades. I guess I should try to watch some of this stuff.

Blade Runner (sci fi earth)
The Good, The Bad, and The ugly (western)
Body Heat (neo noir)
Strangers on a Train (Hitchcock/Kubrick)
This is the End (comedy last 10yr)

Yojimbo is in a class all its own and is a great pick. " I can't leave town yet; I still have people I need to kill".

(I was hoping it would be picked as a Western).

Yeh, it was going to be my Western pick, but I skipped it for a bunch of reasons. Not only is it a great and influential Western, but it's a great and influential anti-Western that was filmed 8 years before The Wild Bunch, which is sometimes accorded the same title.

Round 7
Category: Animation

Bevis and Buthead do America

Very deep category! I thought about many of the Disney classics of my youth and all of the spectacular Pixar types that are deep in story and visually stunning. But that 14 year old boy who still lives inside me somewhere said "nah" This movie is obviously incredibly stupid but then again that is its goal and it scores. Mindless juvenile bathroom humor can be hilarious when done correctly and here it is.

I heard they were gonna reboot these morons. Not sure how that's gonna go in todays climate as I have trouble imagining a "woke" B&B?

so far:
Blade Runner (sci fi earth)
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (western)
Body Heat (neo noir)
Strangers on A Train (Hitchcock/Kubrick)
This is the End (comedy last 10 years)
Yojimbo (Kurasawa)

This pick is indisputable genius. Animations are cartoons, right?

There can't be "woke" B&Bs. It would be a contradiction in terms. I'm hoping for something that goes off the charts -- in the wrong direction.

Pick 7 (lucky number) is best comedy of last ten years category, and the winner is: The Big Short.

Stole this from wiki:

The Big Short is a 2015 American biographical comedy-drama film directed by Adam McKay. Written by McKay and Charles Randolph, it is based on the 2010 book The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine by Michael Lewis showing how the financial crisis of 2007–2008 was triggered by the United States housing bubble. The film stars Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt, with Melissa Leo, Hamish Linklater, John Magaro, Rafe Spall, Jeremy Strong, Finn Wittrock, and Marisa Tomei in supporting roles.

I read the book and also saw the movie. I laughed while reading the book and laughed all through the movie also - it was well done in a kinky sort of way; just perfect really.

Picks So Far So Good:

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1) Scifi
Psycho (2) Hitchcock
The Seven Samurai (3) The Jap Guy
Some Like it Hot (4) Billy Boy
Finding Nemo(5) Animation
Blood Simple(6) Neo-noir
The Big Short(7) Comedy

For comedy in last 10 years, I’m taking the Wes Anderson gem Grand Budapest Hotel, my favorite Wes film. I’m not sure what to say about it other than watch it if you haven’t seen it yet.

I'm gonna make my animation pick now since there's no one ahead of me in the draft who still has that category left.

Pick 7 - Animation - The Nightmare Before Christmas

This isn't just a great animated movie, it's a great movie. I watch this movie every year somewhere around the Halloween/Christmas months and it never gets old. Great animation, great songs, great plot. Simple enough for a child to enjoy but deep enough for an adult to enjoy on rewatch number 10. There's loads in there to reward the keen of eye. I could probably not just quote every song to you, but practically every line to you. Great, great movie.

me too.. love that 1 very early episode. they are in Spanish class, and the teacher tells Butthead to speak a sentence in Spanish..

Butthead strings together a bunch of garbled non-language, during which the viewer can discern the actual word 'siempre,' then he returns to the gibberish, only to end with 'rico suave.' loooooooooooooooooooooooooool
