Modern horror movies thread - Page 3 - The Lounge Discussion and Review on Literature, Arts, Culture

Watched Would You Rather on Netflix today. It's decent, probably not all that memorable. In the same genre as Saw. Had a few moments that the tension was ratcheted up quite effectively. One criticism I have is that, while it has graphic violence, it actually isn't gory enough. There were a couple times where some gore would have been effective.

Anybody remember Saw being a lot better the first viewing? When I saw it in high school, I thought it was a great movie. Every time since, it's seemed laughably bad.

Well it was done on a budget for just over $1 million after all...

To further discuss the topic, we all know you Americans are frightened of the Australian horror film Wolf Creek and the idea that they would be brutally massacred if they ever get stranded in our outback.

You may just be getting older. Saw seems like the kind of super-edgy film I would have been into in my high school days.

Very hit and miss for me. I really liked the couple going on the road trip from the first movie, and I thought the helmet cam zombie one from the 2nd movie was very clever. The others were all kind of meh. The really weak ones were the camping in the woods glitch video, the kids getting abducted by aliens, the skateboarding kids one, and the wraparound vandals story from the original.

I think making these types of movies is a great idea, as it gets to show a lot of up and coming directors and gives us a 20 minute movie from them to test instead of having to watch a full length video from an unknown director. I hope they make more.

Had high expectations for The Babadook thanks to strong critical reviews, kinda disappointed. There's an interesting metaphor underlining the whole thing, but the execution didn't show me anything that hasn't been done a jillion times in low-budget haunted house films. Not bad as a procedural horror movie, it just wasn't the amazing film it was touted to be imo.

End of the Line (2007)
A cracking little self financed action horror that manages to be also creepy and is one of the few horrors where ambiguity works. Watch this film closely. There's more going on with it than would appear on the surface, just a cryptic heads up.

No it's an Australian found footage/mockumentary film. It's solid enough and is available free online uploaded by the filmmakers. In fact I think it was originally meant to be a freely available film from the start, iirc.

I gotta say I was quite disappointed in Martyrs as I felt it bit off more than it could chew philosophically and the conclusion was just a mess for me although I know quite a few who liked it.

Maniac (2012)
Surprisingly cool remake of Bill Lustig's classic with Elijah Wood filling in Joe Spinel's shoes nicely.

A Serbian Film (2010)
They don't come much darker or twisted than this.

Lesson of the Evil (2012)
Maverick director Takashi Miike goes Japanese Columbine in this demented film.

Shrews Nest (2014)
Religious horror with freaky eyed actress Macarena Gomez in loopier than usual form.

Not to be anal but while Blair Witch was a hit, it certainly wasn't the first found footage film and Cannibal Holocaust preceded it by well over a decade. The Last Broadcast came out before it also.
