yes, it was pretty bad. and this is coming from someone who liked the original.

also, regarding the purge series, the sequels were a lot better than the original imo (assuming u haven't seen them yet).

Leatherface did work much better as a stand alone film for me & I liked it better than I was expecting to. While nothing remarkable its effectively nasty in parts.

Have you actually seen the trailer for Jigsaw or its IMDB description (not reviews)? If you have then you'll be able to watch Jigsaw no problem with nothing being ruined as the plot revelation from the earlier films is fully stated in both, from the start pretty much.

I don't think there has been a "horror" movie I've seen in the last handful of years that I didn't get from this thread. Some really good ones recommended and the scores are pretty accurate!!

That said, just watched Tragedy Girls and WOW! That was so much better then I thought it would be. It was funnier, darker and more ****ed up then I figured it would aim for. And a hell of guest cast too!!

some of these are barely horror movies, but what the hey.

Don't Kill It
★★★

A bit like a blend of The Hidden, Constantine and I Come In Peace, we have old Dolph doing his thing, well. Terrific opening and first act, but unfortunately gets quite pedestrian in its quiet scenes.

The Killing of a Sacred DeerThe Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)
★★★½

Slow, overmannered and sometimes annoying, this is nonetheless somewhat captivating, and keeps you guessing about what may happen next. It's reminiscent of Kubrick in places, and Cronenberg at about his 'Dead Ringers' phase.

The Show 2017
★½

Well the makers of this take a clearly exploitation movie premise - a reality show where contestants kill themselves for money - and deliver an earnest, sombre and frankly dull drama about the dangers of death-as-entertainment.

If you want a serious reflection on entertainment and nature of TV, go watch Network, if you want fun, go watch The Running Man, Death Race 2000 etc etc.

Don't watch this though.

47 Meters Down 2017
★★★½

Solid suspenseful thriller that just about keeps from getting too long from the story, with a super-intense first act. Oh, them sharks!

XX 2017
★★★

Hit and miss anthology, which take a quite serious tone in most of its segments, which can be a problem when the actual stories are only 20 minutes long. That isn't long enough to develop characters in a way that suits this tone. To me, the best segment was the lighter one, The Birthday Party, probably cos of those reasons.

Not bad though.

Temple 2017

Pretty dreadful, with characters you don't like doing bad dialogue. A lot of vacuous mood setting that didn't build while you waited for stuff to happen. The pacing was poor, and the acting really needed to be better.

Get Out 2017
★★★★½

Excellent horror thriller with great lead performance, script and excellent growing dread - and unexpected, non-cliche turns here and there. I thought it was going to be Stepford Brothers, but was so much deeper than that.

Geostorm 2017
★★★

'Geostorm' is my new word for a movie that is badly constructed, plotted, dialogued, with terrible character interactions, but is nonetheless very entertaining.

Geostorm was a geostorm.

A couple more from recently:

[rec] - Spanish found footage film based on a documentary film crew following a fire department. They get call to an apartment block where one of the residents is acting a bit weird and end up getting stuck in there amidst an "infection" scare. I found it to be a really fun film that managed to keep up the tension despite not really showing anything particularly scary for most of the film. 8/10

10 Cloverfield Lane - Not sure whether to include this as a horror, but the premise of waking up in an underground bunker with a control-freak weirdo telling you the world has ended seems scary enough to call horror. Anyhow, the first two thirds of the film were ok and were probably going to score a 6-7/10. There was just a bit too much unbelievability to John Goodman's character and the way the three characters interacted, but it was still enjoyable and very watchable. Then the ending. I've read a long article about how, despite it's obvious issues, the final third is a great metaphorical ending to the film, bringing closure to lifelong issues of abuse and control, and how any failings in how it's told, the underlying message makes it all worthwhile etc etc blah blah. Sorry, it's still ****. 5/10

I watched a youtube video of upcoming horror movies in 2018 recently and this one really stuck out to me as having strong potential. Def think it looks to be worthy of seeing in theatres.

Hereditary has gotten a ton of buzz and great reviews.

A Quiet Place looks interesting. I can’t see it referenced anywhere but from the trailer I just watched it looks very similar to a book I read a few years ago called The Silence by Tim Lebbon. Even if it’s not exactly the same, that’s was a good fun read and it’s a very interesting premise.

After a little digging it seems that consensus is A Quiet Place his a derivative of The Silence (book) but isn’t crediting it anywhere. At the same time, a film of The Silence is actually in production. Looking forward to checking both of these out.

Annihilation (2018)

I quite liked this overall & appreciated its somewhat languid dreamy tone, was much better than I was expecting, with a nice sense of unpredictability to it.

I keep meaning to check that one out but need to have some free time as I heard it's nearly three hours. I've also heard it's a bit of a chin stroker.

I'm gonna catch some hate for this, but the original Solaris goes on way too long. I actually preferred the remake.

Thanks! Although I'm not even close to contributing as much as Corpus does!

A couple from this weekend:

Veronica - Saw a bunch of stories online about this being one of the scariest horror movies ever so had to give it a go. It's a Spanish film based around true events, following a girl who messes around with a ouija board and ends up bringing a demonic spirit through into her life. Obviously going into the film with high hopes from the reviews, I was unsurprisingly disappointed. It wasn't terrible by any means, and was quite a fun watch. It was well made, without relying on too many overly dramatic and unrealistic scenes, and was a little creepy in parts. The major let down for me though was that there just wasn't really a storyline - it was literally just "girl invites evil spirit through ouija board - spirit haunts girl a bit more every day until **** goes down". No imagination really, but nothing offensively bad either. 7/10

Villmark Asylum - Norweigan film following a group of decontamination specialists tasked with the job of checking and cleaning up hazardous waste in an abandoned, remote, mountaintop asylum. Of course it's not as abandoned as they thought.... The setting immediately hooked me with this one - I love old medical/asylum type stuff. Thinking about the ****ed up experiments they used to do and the crazy equipment they had is creepy as hell. The film managed to hold a really good level of tension throughout despite having very few jump scares and a general lack of ott 'Hollywood' scenes. Well worth a watch. 8/10

I'm just about on track with my new years resolution to watch 52 horror films in 2018. Need to work on my scoring system a bit though - despite watching some dross, I haven't scored a film below a 5, and there's not enough room to separate out the 7-9 type films.

If you ever have 5-20 minutes to spare, I recommend checking out World of Death on the Bloody Disgusting YouTube channel. They add 2 short films every week. They're generally amateur but well made, and massively range in quality, but still usually an entertaining way to pass a bit of time. Link to playlist here

Thanks for the heads up on Villmark Asylum I'll check it out. If you like Scandinavian horror I'd highly rec Sommarens Tolv Manader (1988 TV), it's a very intriguing film with one of the quietly scariest conclusions I've ever seen.

A Quiet Place

10/10.

Just go see it.

One of the best modern horror films I've seen this decade. On par with recent great horror films like It Follows. I was on the edge of my seat for nearly the entire film.

Was It Follows universally loved here? I thought it was very well made and kept my interest, but then the last part of it was so stupid that it almost ruined the whole thing for me.

I personally found It Follows merely okay actually & didn't like it as much as some fans did. I think it may have been better or more effective as a short actually.
