I'm a pretty big movie buff and I'm really into horror movies. Though classics are great I love modern horror movies the most, pretty much anything past 2000 I consider to be modern.

To give you guys an idea of the types of horror movies I like here are some off the top of my head

k so yea this was a quick mashup of the ones I could think of atm. These are in no specific sequence and they are not all great but I found all of them entertaining. There are definitely a ton of good ones I missed but yea this is just to give you guys an idea about my taste.

As you can see I'm not a huge fan of slasher movies though hostel 1 and 2 were alright I guess, I hate movies like human centipede and tusk as they are just gross and ******ed and have no storyline.

Anyways this thread is open to all modern horror movie discussion, reviews, suggestions, news, whatever. Feel free to mention classics also, I don't mind.

The Ashley Judd movie Bug I remember as being really original and thought-provoking. I guess I'd call it horror. Looking it up, I see it was directed by William Friedkin.

lol, from the looks of imdb, a lot of people really hate this movie.

Blair Witch Project gave me the willies btw. I'm not even kidding.

imdb critics are noobs, theyre really critical cause they want to uphold their reputation, same with rotten tomatoes. I never saw bug but yea blair witch project was alright and it got the whole "found footage" thing started but it got pretty boring like halfway through imo and wasn't all that scary, that said I still saw it like 3 times lol

I just checked bug and it got 6/10 by imdb and 61% on rt, this is above average for both

[REC] (the original spanish one) is great, it's imo the best movie of the whole found footage genre.

Off the top of my head, among the movies i have watched recently, i would recommend :

The Babadook
Pontypool
The Borderlands
Murder Party (although this one really seems to be hit or miss)

I haven't seen It Follows yet, but it's supposed to be quite good

That reminds me, Thesis (Tesis) is really good, by Alejandro Amenábar, the guy who made Open Your Eyes. Maybe that's more suspense, whatever.

OP, why don't you like old school horror? Halloween, Friday 13th, Shining, Elm Street, Alien, Texas Chainsaw, Poltergeist, etc. all great movies (some of the sequels suck, of course). Personally I like older horror much better than modern horror. I mean, you don't see movies like I Spit on your Grave made anymore, and if you do, they're very watered down and vanilla, or they're so ridiculous they're unwatchable.

Bug is great.

Went and saw "It Follows" in the theater with my wife. Pretty good for what it was.

I saw the american version of rec and it was pretty good, tbh I didn't like the babadook and haven't seen the other ones

No one said I don't like old school horror, the shining is one of my favorites but I'm probably younger than most of you guys so I don't relate to the old school genre as well and tbh I don't really find any of them scary at all so when I do watch them its not like when I watch modern horror, to me it would be more like watching a thriller or something. Imo they're different genres but yea nothing wrong with old school horror.

I agree w liking newer horror more. I think the old scary movies are technically better, but I find that whenever I see an old movie I find it incredibly dated and the acting almost always sucks. Most modern horror is that I've seen is gore-garbage but the good movies are really good. I thought the ring was fantastic as well as babadook. Also absolutely loved insidious until about 90% through when it really falls apart, but still great for the most part. Looking forward for other suggestions. Everytime I see something that looks good on Netflix I look it up and it's like 9% on rotten tomatoes

yeah hopefully we'll someday have movies with both the visually more engaging and fun style of modern horror and the eerie atmospheric stuff that made classics actually quite scary.

[REC]2 is decent and [REC]4 should be out soon and has fairly positive reviews afaik

YOU'RE NEXT was good but it's kind of a twist on the slasher genre so not sure if u would like it. Others may be interested though.

thanks for the suggestions, I saw the last exorcism (wasn't a big fan of it) but yea "the strangers" looks like it might be interesting, I'll put it on my watch list.

As for grave encounters I saw it awhile back and it wasn't too memorable but if I recall correctly it was very cliche and dull and nothing unique about it.

I like Rob Zombie's movie The Devil's Rejects. I dno how you feel about horror/comedy type films but Slither was pretty good too.

Cabin in the Woods

This is a meta horror movie that is over the top and amazing. When she pushes that red button, I had the biggest grin on my face I've ever had at a movie.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil

Probably the best horror comedy I've seen. Funny from start to finish, and characters that you actually care about.

+1 I pretty much dislike "normal" horror movies but both of these were different and fantastic.

Tucker and Dale is great. I'm more into cheesy 80s horror but I thought the remake of Maniac was also great.

+3 (I guess) for Tucker and Dale vs. Evil.

I've found that for horror films, the cut-off it around 6.0 on imdb. I feel like I've seen most horror movies that got at least a 6.0, so now I'll actually watch ones that go as low as 5.5. If it gets lower than a 5.5, it sucks.

I'm always interested in seeing new horror films, but let's be honest, generally modern horror films are terrible.

The only ones I can think of that I would consider good movies regardless of genre are Martyrs, The Orphanage, and The Descent.

A couple of my favorite ones that haven't been mentioned are Eden Lake and Frontiers.
