In general I agree. I guess problem for me was that I never got that sense of dread like I did watching The Witch or other similar slow burns.

Not modern as such but The Spider Labyrinth (1988) is a pretty decent horror with a slow burning first half which gives a good sense of dread & has a nice ominous vibe to it. It's on YT on a vhs rip only as last I heard was caught up in rights issues, would really like to see a blu ray release some day.

Nice. Will check it out. Thx

Another for you guys...The Blackcoat's Daughter (2016). I think it is on NF or Amazon. Really liked it and is a slow burner.

I’m not excited for it but the trailer was pretty good. Same with The Curse of La Llorona.

Saw The Autopsy of Jane Doe this weekend. Another disappointment for me given some of the rating here. I thought the acting was awful and found it not scary at all. I must be getting very picky in my old age.

Tried to watch the original Last House on the Left last night and only got through 45 minutes. Can't understand why some think this is a "masterpiece" or even Craven's best work. Just seemed exploitative, poorly acted/filmed, and had way too much forced/misplaced attempts at humor.

2/10 and that is being generous.

Yes, it's an abysmally bad film, and the terrible last act where they cross-cut with goofy cop stuff just makes it even worse.

It is considered important because how much it pushed the bar, but I think it's just a bad movie.

And I can argue the merits of some really hated movies, like I Spit on Your Grave

Watched Blackcoat Daughter over weekend.
Thought the story was not that good but
the filming techniques and atmosphere of dread made it okay.
6/10

I watched Happy Death Day (2017, not the new sequel). It was better than I expected. Maybe more of a mystery than a horror movie. Looking forward to the sequel.

Yeah, it's murder Groundhog Day. Agree, more of a mystery and kind of dark comedy than horror.

Will have to check that one out. Blood Punch is also a murder Groundhog Day and was awesome - again kinda dark comedy rather than horror, but a great film.

Interesting. I loved Blackcoat's Daughter and would highly recommend it. Very dark and I thought a very good slow burn in terms of plot. I totally agree on the filming and atmosphere point.

Watched Unsane yesterday. Interesting premise, but I thought the execution was poor. Only 88 minutes so I guess worth a peek if you are a soderbergh fan. 5/10 for me.

Watched Veronica yesterday. Mixed feelings....story was pretty good but I thought the execution could have been better. A decent watch overall.

Watched Raw last night. At this point in my horror movie career, it takes a lot to provoke a visceral reaction out of me. This movie did it and earns pretty high marks because of it. Very good visually as well although the story itself is a little odd (including the ending). Definitely worth a watch in my book.

Pretty much what I thought. Not much bad about it, just nothing groundbreaking or very interesting either. Just a standard, easy watch.

Scariest movie I saw was Triangle. I remember watching this movie alone on a rainy night. Almost had to pause it midway in because it was that scary.

So Triangle was on my list to watch and because of your reco, I fired it up last night. I didn't find it scary at all...interesting premise for sure and reminded of films like Memento and The Endless. Decent fun, but I don't even think it belongs in the Horror genre.
