I went and saw Hereditary at the cheapo theater, it was interesting. I think it created a definite sense of dread, so effective in that way. Thinking back on the plot though, a lot of it really doesn't make much sense tbh. I will say it was well worth the $1.99 I paid to get in!

After, I checked reviews and was surprised to find out how well-received it had been in many quarters. But I don't really have a real quarrel with that, not being a horror movie guy at all. For me, good horror will always be classics like The Exorcist, The Omen, the old monsters from the 30s etc., even Blair Witch which I thought was excellent. And I liked The Witch too, more recently. I don't think Hereditary was really playing in the big leagues like all those.

Cold Skin just popped up on Netflix (UK). A kind of mash up of The Terror and The Shape of Water, but made before either of those. A recommend from me.

I watched it back in April, and gave it 7/10

My review at the time was:

Rather good and distinct movie, a kind of mashup of Shadow over Innsmouth and I am Legend, with distinct strands of Moby Dick and Heart of Darkness thrown in.

Ray Stevenson's a standout as the near-mad Ahab figure, and whilst it's not scary, it's tense and the interplay of the two torn men is nicely handled.

Endless was pretty great.

Spoiler:
It kind of reminded me of a really bad psychadelic trip I had where I was stuck in a loop and thought I was trapped there forever.

Ended up watching Resolution after I realized they were connected and shared the same universe.

Definitely low budget with b level acting but still thoroughly enjoyed it.

If you liked The Endless you'd probably also like

Spoiler:
Coherence
The one I love

Anyone see A Quiet Place? What a piece of crap that was. I have no idea what these rave reviews are for. It felt like an amateurish movie from a college student. It's one of these films where I knew 80% of the movie based on a 60 second trailer. I feel like this was just some kind of manipulated marketing campaign to create demand.

I disagree with your assessment of the movie and thought it was quite enjoyable, but isn't the bolded just the definition of advertising?? That's what marketing is supposed to do.

Get Out, The Endless, The Witch, Hereditary? A Quiet Place was not great but at least OK.

I liked A Quiet Place and Hereditary, but neither one as much as expected after hearing raves here and elsewhere. Really liked Get Out, but it felt much more like comedy / satire than Horror. The Witch was 3.5 years ago; probably doesn't count as "awhile".

I mean like I don't even remember seeing it advertised when it came out, but then the blurbs I read were implying it was some kind of DVD/streaming sensation.

I have seen all of those... I guess my timeframe was more on the past year / 6 months. Feels like there were more good ones that came out the past few years than this year. Maybe there's some good ones in the works? I've watched basically every horror movie with IMDB rating > 6 made in this decade. I need some more quality modern horror .

i do have haunting of hill house (tv series on netflix) on my list to check out, just need to get started on it. not a movie, but heard good things

Get Out and The Witch are top tier, and if we're talking last 6 months... Apostle on Netlfix only came out in the last week and is solid... and in the last 3 weeks we got Mandy, and Mandy is a masterpiece.

I haven't seen Mandy or Apostle yet - thanks for those rec's I will check them out.

In return I'll recommend Unsane, hadn't seen it mentioned yet. Decent horror flick for if you've seen all the obvious ones and are trying to find hidden gems.

Also another one I just discovered for my criteria (IMDB > 6.0 and over 10k votes), that it looks like i've missed is Better Watch Out. Prob will be checking that one out as well.

Is Unsane really a horror flick? I thought it more as a thriller

I'd say that it's at least in a horror subgenre, potentially could be more of a thriller though. Wikipedia calls it a "psychological horror" for what its worth.

Hold the Dark (2018) has elements of The Terror AMC TV series (Grade A+) since it has the Tuunbaq demon in the Artic , Wind River since it is outdoors snow bound violent film, and a serial killer like No Country for Old Men. Unfortunately the plot in the movie doesn't make much sense unless you bother to read the book that it is based on or web search like I did. Here are background spoilers you might read before you see it since they won't spoil the endings I think:

Spoiler:
Vern and Medora Slone are Nordic husband and wife and they are shockingly also brother and sister twins. She gives clues to their relationship to Core in the film’s beginning. They are each partly human and partly wolf-demon (Tuunbaq). She summons the writer Core to her home on false pretense. She really wants only for him to tell the world about her and her husband's true nature. Core sees a wolf pack devour a wolf pup for reasons of scarce resources and survival and that is supposed to be similar to why the murderous couple were doing what they were doing. The point is to show that the couple's animalistic violence is part of their nature too and it is necessary for them to survive. Evil acts are necessary for them as it is for the wolves.

Without the background the movie is probably Grade B.
