Just caught Hereditary. For a first-time director, the look is very impressive. It’s clear he’s studied the horror classics (The Shining and Rosemary’s Baby are obvious influences on the tone/atmosphere).

Some of the allusions were too on the nose for my taste and the pacing was a little drawn out (in specific scenes and in the middle as a whole). The plot is kind of a mess and I saw some of the reversals coming a mile away.

These faults are forgivable because the movie achieves a rare feat: genuine frisson and dread.

It’s as mental as The Exorcist, which is saying a lot. The director really goes for it. It’s not nearly as good as The Wailing (the only other recent horror film of high quality), but compared to weak, pretentious pseudo-horror like The Witch or Under the Skin, this is state of the art. Looking forward to his future work.

I would highly recommend seeing it in a theatre.

Hereditary was a bit of a mess for me. Bloated, not enough info in the first half, no real ground rules laid down...just a few interesting visuals surrounded by gobblygook.

The Witch is right there, too.

Are we really not supposed to think anyone ever tried that before?

The whole scene in the pool area was just ridiculously bad anyway. Such a disappointment after the movie up to that point was so good (although personally I already wondered why no one tried just flying overseas to escape).

I think you need to watch the movie again.

A final hinted reversal doesn't fix the ridiculousness of the climax.

Anyway, the best horror movie I have seen in recent years was "Don't Breathe". I had to add some positivity to the thread.

Any way you slice it, the last 3-5 years have been incredible for modern horror films. Get Out and The Witch are going to stay with me a long time and I haven't even seen Hereditary or It Follows yet.

Mine was The Wailing followed closely by Train to Busan. Get Out & The Girl With All the Gifts were great as well.

Hidden in the Woods (2009)

Two sisters & their incestuous son flee their sex offending drug dealing father in this nasty lo fi offering from Chile. Has its moments but also some rather dodgy editing which kinda annoyed me. Was remade a few years back by Michael Biehn, funnily enough, who also stars in, alongside William Forsythe.

Downrange (2017)

A group of car poolers become the targets for a sniper on an isolated country road in this not bad Horror. Acting a shade clunky but makes the most out of its limited setting & it has some very effective & unpleasant gore scenes. Solid enough stuff overall.

I loved "Get Out" as well, but I wouldn't call it a horror movie. It seemed more like a satire / black comedy.

For me Get Out was actually a great throwback to those bad ole 70s paranoia Thriller-Horrors such as Coma (1976), The Stepford Wives (1975) or Race With the Devil (1975).

I was excited to see Heredity and generally avoided trailers/talk/reviews about it.

It wasnt as good as I thought it would be, though the last half hour or so was pretty scary as I was the only one in the theatre and kept hearing noises from behind.

When I went home I watched a couple "what you missed/explanation" type videos on youtube and realized the movie was way better than I thought.

There were lots of clues and stuff throughout and I think I was sitting around waiting for scares rather than really paying attention to each scene in full.

I suggest approaching it as a mystery movie with some creepy/scary stuff thrown in rather than an all out horror movie.

I haven't yet seen anyone mention the movie Oculus as of yet (Maybe I missed it?) I thought it was pretty good. I really liked the antagonist, the Lasser Glass, an evil mirror.

Aside from that, I thought the V/H/S movies were pretty good. Sinister had me really disturbed, but I thought the sequel was bad.

There's a nice movie called The Pact that's really effective in some parts as a great horror movie. I didn't really care much for the twist ending tho. I also thought Lights Out was interesting but not that good.

There's also some real gems on YouTube, horror short films. Vienna Waits for You is one of my favorites. I'd highly recommend watching it.

Happened to catch an interview with a random horror writer who recommended Hush, which is on Netflix. It was decent as far as horror movies go. I can see why he liked it since the main character was a writer.

Try Communion aka Alice Sweet Alice aka Holy Terror (1976) if you haven't seen yet it's really good & quite creepy. Nothing to do with exorcisms but is a twisted murder mystery with Giallo overtones & is one of the more rather overlooked Horrors imho. Definitely worth checking out.

I actually felt that The Wailing (2016) had strong Catholic overtones also.

A more obscure one is Il Demonio (1963) which imo was a definite influence on The Exorcist & even has a kinda spider walk & is another really good Catholic horror.

Stigmata (1999) isn't bad or I enjoyed it for what it was anyway.

Regarding religious/Satanic themed Horror in general:

Angel Heart (1986) is amazing & would probably make my top five Horrors of all time.

Race With the Devil & The Devil's Rain (both 1975) are way entertaining & The Last Exorcism (2010) is dumb but fun.

Michele Soavi's La Setta/The Sect (1991) doesn't make a whole lotta sense but what it lacks in coherence it makes up for with sheer Italian style & I quite liked it overall.

Damned in Venice (1978) while obscure is a surprisingly creepy, atmospheric & effective Italian Omen cash in & a lot better than I was expecting.

Rawhead Rex (1986) is as ridiculously entertaining as it's stupid but that's probably because I'm Irish so had a blast with it & to me it comes across like a Horror version of Father Ted.

Btw, Rawhead, Devil's Rain, The Sect & Communion were all on youtube last I checked with either dvd or HD transfers.

The Omen is one of my favorite horror movies ever, and the first sequel is very good as well. Don't remember being very impressed by the third one where Damien is an adult, but I still enjoyed it to complete the story.

I am Hero, the Japanese version of World War Z or maybe not. I really love the story, the chasing, biting, and all. You guys should watch it.
