Hi Guys, a bit of a grunch here with questions:

So I'm looking to buy a queen mattress + boxspring, budget ~$2k.

1) Is there a reason to go with a good or matching boxspring?

2) I'm starting to do a bit of online shopping just to get a baseline, and seeing a lot of ~$600/boxspring. I've heard and seen people say you should always get your boxspring for free. These don't seem to add up. What's the story?

3) If I want to buy a mattress at a B&M store, what's the best way to get the price I "should" be paying using the major mattress sites online? (If that's possible...)

4) I'm assuming in this price range I should definitely be looking at free delivery, free bed frame, probably some free pillows? Anything else?

I got a tempurpedic raphsody queen sized bed. How much would be reasonable to pay for it with 1 pillow (shoulda haggled for 2). I got the bed, base, and "free" frame. I payed $2819 out the door w/ shipping and tax.

Could I have done better-- maybe get the extra pillow?

Has anyone tried the Sealy Embody memory foam? It says it's cooler than Tempurpedic. Can anyone confirm this? It felt as comfy as the Tempurpedic when I tried it in-store today, but being a very hot sleeper I'm worried about it being uncomfortable heat-wise.

Also, with memory foam has anyone had any issues with their wife, girlfriend, partner rolling into them because of the indentations or is this only an issue if you are sleeping right next to each other?

Any update on this Dom? Did you end buying a mattress from Amazon?

I am about to start looking.

I ended up buying a memory foam mattress on eBay, and I'm quite happy with it. I'm not home and I dont remember if it was the above brand or not. The Sheex are awesome, as well.

I bought a California King memory foam from Walmart and love it. $400, 1800 reviews and 1600 of the reviews are 4 or 5 stars.

I think we might just try the memory foam mattress. Either from Walmart, or from Amazon. Walmart might work better though, just cause of the return policy in case we don't like it.

All of my friends are recommending sleep number beds, but they seem awfully expensive, even the competitor brands.

I've only heard bad things about the sleep number, online and irl.

The California King memory foam from Walmart comes in a small box and it grows to the California King size after a few hours. It would be funny if they required you to put it back in the box

I bought the bed from Walmart as well for $200. Came with no instructions and an extra set of screws/bolts/tools... just to **** with you of course.

I just purchased an serta icomfort Genius memory foam bed. So far so good, much less expensive than a comparable Tempurpedic. It is firm and comes with a cooling layer of memory foam Gel, so it is supposed to keep you cooler in the summer.

I have a bad back and have awoken with no soreness or stiffness in my back and it seems to conform to your body, but it is firm enough that you don't sink in. My only question is will it hold up, as I am a fairly large individual. It does have a 15 year replacement warranty.

If you dont mind, where did you purchase this bed from and for how much? Also, how much was "retail" and how much were they willing to take if you neg?

I have read that tempur pedic products are SET prices and are supposed to be non-negotiatable (and that a dealer can lose their product line).

Do any of the "S" brands control their prices? Basically, I'm trying to pay 80% (at the most) of the asking price for a mattress and that includes tax. delivery. and old bed removal at a speciality sleep store...

I bought it from Americas Mattress....originally they said they would not negotiate, but I asked one more time and he supposedly called his home office and they gave me a price of $1500 out the door including tax and delivery...and two pillows. The "sale" price they had listed was $1599 and list was was 2499.

I probably should have done some more research on the bed first, because I have found some people on the internet complaining that the foam broke down after a few months. So far so good, but I have only had one month.

I built a mattress from the 8" version of this, with a 4" HD foam mattress on top from EBay (PM for seller if you like; you can get ripped off easily on memory foam and this seller is straight up) all on a plywood base on top of our old box springs.

Best sleep I ever got ainec.

I think I need to buy some plywood. Right now my mattress is just on a bed with wood slats that are spaced about 4-5" from each other. The sleep is amazing, but I read that the bed should be on a flat surface to ensure durability.

Be sure to drill a lot of holes for venting. The epic fatwallet thread had a post from somebody who lifted the mattress and found black mold all over the plywood.

These are supposed to be controlled pricing but I doubt Serta will keep as close of tabs as Tempurpedic.

The Icomforts are ok but they are the exact same material that you get in the costco beds, branded and with a nicer cover. If you don't want to spend the money on the Tempurpedic save money and get the bed from Costco but be aware it is a bit lower quality than Tempur but might be worth the savings.

The negative reviews I see mostly say it's a lot firmer than they expected, what do you think? And looking at Amazon there seems to be quite a few memory foam manufacturers...is there much difference between them?

I've had an $800 mattress used for about 5 months, then put in storage for about 2 years. I want to get rid of the storage unit.

Will I be able to sell it on craigslist for ~$200-300, or should I give this thing away to a friend?

when it comes to memory foam mattresses, is the total thickness that important or is the top portion the most important? i am a complete noob with this stuff. based on this thread and my budget, i am looking at these three relatively similarly priced mattresses. if anyone could give their overall thoughts on which is the "best" i'd appreciate it. thanks.

Lived in sin with the g/f for a few years, with a pillow-top queen bed in our bedroom. We share the bed with our two cats. Finally made an honest woman out of her this summer. After staying in king beds the weekend of our wedding and subsequent honeymoon in Sedona, we decided it was time to upgrade to a bigger and better bed.

After alot of research, including the sage advice in this thread, I wanted to go with a latex mattress for the coolness. We live in a 1.5 story house in Minneapolis. Which essentially means we have the entire upstairs as our bedroom. It also means our bedroom ends up being pretty damn hot because alot of heat passes through as it escapes through our roof. I couldn't find the latex mattress we wanted, and the wife was getting sick of looking, so we ended up buying the king-size of this set through a local shop:

http://www.themattressexpert.com/Ste...ter-Blisswood/

In the meantime, I ordered a latex mattress pad and pillows, as well as a bamboo sheet set. When I was ordering the sheets, I asked her what color she wanted - she picked a color and said "may as well order two". Um, each set is $200. "Oh okay, just order one then."

Mattress set, latex pad and pillows, and bamboo sheet set us back a little over $2,600 all-in.

Anyways, we used the tight-top firm bed for a few days before we got the latex pad, and my back had never been so sore in my life. The latex mattress pad arrived the same day as the sheets, and ever since we added these accessories the sleeping has been heavenly. No back problems, less tossing and turning, and always sleep through the night and feel fully rested in the morning.

As an aside, with a king bed the sexy time is cut down because we have so much space now - both of us sleep with a cat on our half of the bed with a couple of feet of space between us. Although that may also be attributed to the fact that we are now just old and married....

I just bought a new Cal King Latex mattress from Foam Sweet Foam: http://www.foamsweetfoam.com/

I did a ****load of research. If you care at all about the latex being natural (as opposed to petroleum-based), FSF is tough to beat in price and quality. They're not far from LA so I was able to visit and lay on the different options. Their mattresses are composed of separate 3" layers, so you can customize the firmness. I have four layers: two layers of medium on top of a firm layer on top of an extra firm layer. If it ends up being too soft I can go firm - medium - medium - extra firm, but I'm happy with the current configuration.

It's not cheap, but this is supposed to be our mattress for the next several decades so I wanted to buy the highest quality I could. Mattresses of similar quality/construction from less do-it-yourself type places cost 2x as much.

Do not buy a serta Icomfort bed, I bought one about 6 months ago and for the first few months I loved it....but something happens to the foam and it breaks down and doesn't support you. I have had the worst lower back pain the last few days when waking up. I have read about several other people having similar problems as well.

Hey guys, random bump.

I am using a memory foam mattress, it is really uncomfortable after a few months. I feel like I get insufficient back support. I'm going back to either a hard foam or coil mattress, haven't decided which yet. Do you guys know the pros and cons of foam or coil?

Also I think be careful about memory foam. It feels like my back and core sort of deteriorated after sleeping on them for a while. Maybe I was doing it wrong though.

I can get a California king for $665. Definitely thinking about it.

The other product is Sheex - a moisture-wicking, satiny bedding that also has gotten some good reviews and looks like a great cooling option in the heat of Las Vegas (where I live).

So has anyone had any experience with either of these?

Any updated thoughts on the memory foam mattresses? Considering getting one, but there are some common negative reviews:

1) they sleep hot
2) the initial chemical smell that needs to be aired out
3) not maintaing their initial shape and getting lumpy over time

What do you guys think?
