Al (responding to Peg's comments about hair on his back): Peg, that hair serves a purpose. It keeps you offa me.
Didn't the pilot also have Al asking Peg, after being told they were expecting company, "Who the hell would want to come over here?"

And informing Marcy,"And I'm telling you your son is going to grow up to be a sissy-mary if you don't let him play sports"

I may be paraphrasin, but I remember watching the pilot episode the night it first aired, in a cheap hotel room in Ft. Lauderdale....aaaah, good times.

Season 1 Episode 4: But I Didn't Shoot the Deputy

Note this is often shown as 3rd in this season, but it was made 4th.

Synopsis: There's a rash of burglaries in the neighbourhood, and to take steps against it Al buys a gun, whilst Marcy and Steve get a vicious dog. Al hears something downstairs and takes a shot at it, and shoots the Rhoades's dog dead. Al admits this to Steve and Marcy, and gets rid of the dog, but M+S want a decent burial, so Al asks Peg to fill a box with heavy things, which they bury at the funeral. During the burial, Al asks Peg what she used to fill the box, and she tells him that she used his bowling ball. He cries like a baby.

Other Trivia: This episode was nominated for a Emmy Award for Outstanding Lighting Direction (Electronic) for a Series.

Rating: 7/10

This is a pretty good one, with both Al and Peg in fine form. Their characters are now pretty much set for the rest of the 11 seasons in this one (except Al shows an interest in having sex with Peg twice during this show), and shows the continuing evolution of the Bundys and the Rhoades's.

1st: First appearance of Marcy's psycho side, where she talks about what she'd do to the burglars if she got hold of them. It's not pretty, and fishhooks are mentioned.

Quotes:
--------------------------
Marcy: Talking about the dog, where is he?
Al: Well he's out in my yard! You can't miss him... I didn't.
--------------------------
Steve: (to Al) You shot my dog in the middle of a bowel movement?
--------------------------
Steve: Hi, Al. Hope we're not interrupting anything.
Al: Naaaah, just going to have a little sex with the wife. What the heck, there's always next month.

I liked this episode. Thought it was hilarious. Al and Peg's relationship is really different from the later seasons. He's actually normal . I remember him being much more cynical. And he even likes Peg. This is totally weird. funny to see how this couple started out. I love the relationship between them and their neighbors. Very good episode.

A: How much you want for him?
M: A thousand dollars.
A: A thousand dollars?! For a dog who just sat there and let me shoot him?

M: Alright, forget the money. You know what I want.
A: Yes I do and you're too late. Peg's already got it.

So I was in Kiev recently having a drink at the bar and casually noticed the "Married with Children" was on TV. Foreign language shows are typically dubbed over, but I did a double take when I noticed that Al was actually speaking Russian. The show is a copy, using the original American scripts. The home looks the same on the inside, but it takes place in a typical Russian flat rather than a house. The name of the show is "Happy Together." I would definitely recommend this to all you "Married with Children" connoiseurs.

Season 1, Episode 5: Have You Driven a Ford Lately?

Synopsis: Steve and Al buy an old rusting Ford Mustang, and dream of renovating it. They do just that, and take it out for its first drive, resulting in the usual Bundy result when this sort of thing happens.

First: First time Al gets Steve in on one of his disastrous schemes.

Rating: 7/10

Yes, this was a good one, with the women being really put out by the guys spending time and money on a car. We find out Peg was no sweet-miss-innocent in high school (like anyone thought that?) where she discussing doing it in the back of cars with guys ('It gets really expensive to chip in for motel rooms'), and Steve starts to really feel like a man again, instead of an under-the-thumb nerd.

Good one!

Al: You used to buy a car to have fun. Now you worry about four doors, milage, whether or not you survive a head-on collision. I mean, who cares?
--------------------------------------------------------
Steve: come on Al, live a little. You can't go through your whole life ordering dinner through a clowns head.
Al: Oh yeah? (opens Peggy's mouth and talks into it) Cook some food!
--------------------------------------------------------
Al: Steve, let's go for a ride in the Mustang. Just sit and look coolly out the window and we'll pretend these (Gesturing at their wives) are our mothers.
--------------------------------------------------------
Steve: It's not just a car, honey - it's a piece of history. A 289 with dual carbs and a pony interior.
Marcy: Steve, where did you learn to talk like that?
Steve: Come on honey. After all, I was a guy before I met you.

Season 1, Episode 6: Whose Room Is It Anyway?

Synopsis: Al, as usual, gets no tax refund, while the Rhoades's get a whopper. They decide to have a new room added, and Al tries to get Steve to put in a pool room, whilst Peg tries to get Marcy to put in an exercise room.

I give this one 9/10, it's got some truly classic dialogue and almost every line is funny. Again, Steve gets suckered into a scheme by Al, but we also see a parallel of Peg suckering in Marcy. The Bundys are truly only ever out for themselves.

First: Al shows his hatred of the French. At length.

--------------------------
Al: I know the perfect room. A pool room for you and me.
Steve: I don't know. I think we should get a room we both like.
Al: Well she's got one. She's got the kitchen!
--------------------------
Al: I want you to cut down on your entertainment expenditures. You know, records, movies, bleach...
Kelly: Fine, but I'm warning you: I'll steal bleach before I give up my blondeness.
Al: Good girl.
--------------------------
Marcy: Hi. We've been nut-picking and we brought you a bag.
Peggy: Aw.
Marcy: You got a nut-cracker?
Al: You're looking at her.
--------------------------
Marcy: The only thing is - we don't know what to do with the money.
Al: Why don't you have a couple of kids - they'll suck it up like a Hoover.
--------------------------
Al: Oh, sure, our rights are not important? Anything a woman says is fine with us? Gee, when did men become such losers? It used to be so great to be a man. Women were there, to please us. They'd look after the kids and we'd go out and have a good time. That's the natural order of things. What happened, Steve?
Steve: Well, Al...
Al: I'll tell you what happened, Steve. Somebody told women they should start enjoying sex, too. That was the beginning of the end. Now they like it but it's work for us. Everything's work for us. It's this equality thing, it's killing us. You know who I blame?
Steve: The French?
(Al nods his agreement)
Al: I think it's this - this Curie guy started the whole thing. He's the guy that let his wife take the credit for discovering radium.
Steve: But she did discover radium.
Al: Ah, probably because he left it out one night. That never would have happened if he had his own room. Einstein had his own room. You think Einstein invented the theory of relativity in his wife's exercise room? No. He was in his own room with the door closed.

PEGGY: Oh, I've always wanted to go to Paris.

AL : Oh yeah, Paris. Where they hate Americans. Where they won't let our bombers fly overhead
- oh yeah, until they get invaded. Then they come crawling back to us, beret in hand, for
us to bail them out with my tax dollars. That's where you wanna go?

STEVE: [quickly] No, no. We just said that. You know, to kid you. We hate the French.

AL: You know what I would do if I had a few extra bucks?

MARCY: Bomb the French?

AL: No, I was talking about a little extra money. No, anyhow, I'd like to add on to our
house. You know, just to have a little room for me. Somewhere I could go relax, sit back,
read the paper...

PEGGY: Another bathroom, huh?

Great great episode DB. Loved this one so much that I'm watching it again .

This episode could have been taken straight from my life. A guy who is crazy about ugly junk cars (and more excited about an ash tray than taking me out to dinner), and a girl who always wants to eat out whether she can afford it or not. Fantastic dialogue.

Season 1, Episode 7: Al Loses his Cherry

synopsis: Al and Peg have a fight, and Al threatens to not come home. Instead, he goes and stays with Luke Ventura, and two air hostesses turn up, the Cherry sisters, Sherry and Terry. Al has a chance to have sex with a sexy young blonde...guess what happens?

7/10

A pretty good one, where we get a little more insight into how Bud and Kelly are (Kelly calls herself a boyfriend-stealer), and also we get some insight into how Al thinks. Very enjoyable, and you gotta feel bad for the big lunk. However, he manages to take it out on Peg at the end, and I have a feeling she didn't mind one bit.

Firsts: Al gets offered sex by a woman other than Peg, first minor celbrity to appear in the series (Jerry Hall)
Lasts: Luke Ventura's last episode

Dialogue:

Peggy: I'd ground both of you, but then that would mean you would be here all day. So, your punishment is, you're grounded tomorrow when your father is home and I'm out shopping.
------------------------------
Al: I don't care, Peg. I'm not going to one of your family gatherings.
Peg: It's not a gathering. It's a wedding.
Al: Who's getting married?
Peg: Harriet.
Al: Harriet? You mean someone answered the ad? Some people will do anything to keep from being deported.
Peg: Hey, Jose is a very nice man.
------------------------------
Peg: Look, we did have a fight, but don't worry. Your father will be home soon.
Kelly: Well, I hope wherever Dad is he's nowhere near another woman. Mom, I hate to tell you, but as a boyfriend-stealer myself, the best time to get them is right after a fight.
Peg: Oh, who would want your father?
Kelly: Mom, let me tell you. When a woman gets to be around your age, they get real desperate.
------------------------------
Peg: Oh, gee, Al, I'm so glad you're home.

Al: Wear this.

Aw, Al's so honorable. What a good ending. I really liked the sequence at Luke's apartment. Al was hilarious. This episode turned out better than I thought it would. Your pics are great DB. Keep them coming!

SHERRY: The reason she's in first class and I'm in coach is 'cause she's much smarter than I am.
One time I went into the cockpit and I actually saw her sitting on the pilot's lap,
helping him fly the plane. She must've been very good, because he told the co-pilot to
get out.

(Al takes this in.)

SHERRY: [indicating Al's arms] Man, you have very strong forearms.

AL: [proudly] Yeah?

SHERRY: It must be from all that flushing.
