Season 4, Episode 3: Buck saves the Day

Synposis: Al somehow gets roped into taking a gang of kids camping (after being sold to the highest bidder by Bud), and is accompanied by Steve. Meanwhile Peg has some of her friends over to play poker, and they all get fleeced by Kelly. Al+co get stranded in the woods, and he sends Bud out to rescue them. Guess what happens.

6.5/10
Pretty good, with a great opening shot of Al picking his feet to the total disgust of Peg + Bud. Al takes quite a paternal hand to the kids though, constantly warning them of the dangers of marriage, and should be applauded. Steve acting like an experienced woodsman and then getting poisoned/bitten also made me laugh.

Dialogue:
---------------
Bud: Come on Kel, just do like I do. Use your wits.
Kelly: I do.
Bud: I said wits. With a 'w'.
Kelly: Mom, he's spelling at me again.
---------------
Al: Once upon a time, there was a young boy. A boy... full of hope. He was single, and he was happy. Then one night, much like tonight, something rose from the swamp. He heard a noise behind him: thump-thump, thump-thump. He walked a little faster. Thump-thump-thump-thump. Then he saw it. There, in the light of a bar, stood the evil, redheaded, high-heeled spandex monster. He ran from it. He stood it up, he dated others, but nothing could stop it! He could hear it's wild call: "oh honey? Honey?" It was horrible. Finally... it trapped him. Opened... opened its hideous mouth, beared its fangs and said, "marry me?"
Victor: And did he marry it, Danno?
Al: Yes, I'm afraid he did. And he was never heard from again. But the worst of it is that there still some of them out there. There might me one be one behind that tree! But there might not be. But beware, wherever a man is free, and has change in his pockets, they'll come a creapin' and... they can't be stopped.
-----------------
Al: Okay kids, we get out of here alive what are we going to do? Victor.
Victor: Never marry.
Al: That's right. So remember, kids, when you meet a woman, no matter how nice she is or what she looks like, remember: women get worse. They get...
Victor: Older.
Joey: Meaner.
Bud: Fatter?
----------------
Peggy: Pick a place and park. The night is young, the men are gone, the game is poker. And the only thing "wild" is me! Kelly, you wanna join us?
Kelly: Sure, why not? [to herself] Look what my life has become. Playing cards with a bunch of sea hags.
(Kelly gets up and takes a place at the table.)
Marcy: Have you ever played before?
Kelly: Just with the guys.
Fern: Well, ante up.
(The women start to get their money out and Kelly starts to take off her top, but stops when she sees that the others are all staring at her. She slowly lowers her top.)

Season 4, Episode 4: Tooth or Consequences

synopsis: Al gets a toothache after telling Marcy how great his teeth are, and manages to see the dentist at the worst possible time...

9/10: This is pretty much the perfect MWC episode of the 'Steve' era. It has everything; almost every line is a good or great joke; there's the best Marcy/chicken joke of the whole run; there's Al slamming one of Kelly's boyfriends into a wall a couple of times; there's Traci Lords as a golddigging dental assistant; there's Marcy getting turned on thinking about the dentist; it just keeps going.

My favourite episode, in fact.

Dialogue:
----------------------
Marcy: I love to go to the dentist! A man in white hovering over me while I'm trapped helpless in a chair. He cleans me, he flosses me, his instrument's alive in my mouth. And just when I think I can't take anymore... he says, "Good girl, Marcy. You can spit now."
(Marcy wipes the side of her chin and smiles)
Peggy: Al, I want to go to the dentist.
----------------------
TC: Come on, now. You've got nothing to be afraid of. You won't feel a thing.
(TC puts a bib around Al's neck.)
Al: What's this for?
TC: Oh, it's just to soak up the blood.
----------------------
Dentist: Alright Bundy, let's see what you've got for me. Open up.
Al: No!
Dentist: Come on Bundy, I'm a pro! I've seen it all, I've done it all. Come on, open up.
(Al reluctantly opens his mouth. Dr. Plierson takes one look and recoils in horror.)
Dentist: Darrgghh! Mother of all creatures big and small!
----------------------
Dentist: Women. There the lowest form of life. You married Bundy?
Al: Look in these eyes.
(The doctor nods understandingly)

hahahahahahaha....that is so great...

DB, I've always wondered...is this show very "foreign" to you, like The Young Ones or Fawlty Towers is to me? I love those shows but because they are so decidedly "British" I sometimes feel I am missing a level of humor...

No it feels completely fine. Remember, we have always had a lot of US imports, so US culture doesn't feel foreign.

I never realized that was Traci Lords.

I love when Al has the stuffed duck and balloon as he enters the office, and when the hygienist asks for it to give to a little kid, his quip response is "Tough!"

So many times I've wanted to do that at the dentist.

In the US, 3 cable channels now show reruns. TBS has it everyday, including weekends, in the overnight hours (3-5 AM Central), and I tivo them. They just got through the final episode on Sunday, and should be resetting again.

TV Land shows it at varying times through the week, and Spike TV also plays some though not on a consistent schedule.

Also, Al Bundy is very 'English' in his approach to life (which is kind of he wants a quiet life if possible, but the tougher it gets, the tougher you get) even though he is obviously American through and through, so in fact it feels more English than most US imports. It came as no surprise to find out, down the line, Bundys came from England.

The first 10 series are out on DVD, and I recommend them. The 11th and final series is out in about a month I think.

Interesting observation. It does sort of have a different feel to it, I agree. Here I was impressed that you were in love with an American family when all along you've been thinking it has an English tone!

This episode also has a great opener:

Al arrives on the front step of the Bundy house.

Al: Ah, home sweet hell.

Al gets his wallet out of his pocket and puts is in his sock to hide it from his family.
The neighbors call out to Al.

Guy 1: Al Bundy home for supper? Never say die, huh? Ha ha ha!
Guy 2: Hey, Bundy! I had steak tonight. What are you having?
Al: If I was the mailman, I'd be having your wife.

Season 4, Episode 5: He ain't much but he's all mine

synopsis: Peg goes to the hair salon, taking Marcy, and starts talking to a golddigging blonde. She thinks the digger has her claws in Al. Also, Marcy gets a haircut just like Peggy's.

6/10: Not bad, we get some insight into Al's day as Steve is sent to follow him, but the best thing about it is Marcy's Beehive. The kids starting to look for new prospective stepfathers as an improvement on Al is also funny.

Dialogue:
-----------------------
Peg: I was thinking we could find someplace romantic and grope each other in the dark.
Al: I don't think I could find anything in the dark. None of the important parts are where they used to be.
Peg: Actually, you couldn't find them in the light, either.
-----------------------
Peg: Kelly, I want to talk to you about something.
Kelly: I'm a good girl, mommy. I said "no camera".
Peg: Oh, I don't care what you do. This is about me.
----------------------
Bud: We don't want to see you and Dad break up. We're almost like a family here. You two should stay together forever. (BEAT) However, if you find that you can't, may I suggest Mr. Rudnick, the butcher. He makes a nice living, we'd always have fresh meat on the table, and season tickets to the Cubs. I can't say I like the sound of Bud Rudnick, but, pound for pound, he's the better father.
Kelly: Oh, wait. Not so fast, Bud. I've been scoping out Mr. Fletcher, the dry cleaner. He's got a Porsche, Cable TV and a bad heart.
----------------------
Peggy: I've taken the best years of Al's life and this is how he thanks me.
