So, I have five classes today...with about 20 or so students in each class. Not one of my students today have ever seen a Star trek TV show or movie. Not one. These are college freshmen.

Not at all surprised, Dom. I'm always amazed how little history they know--and it's not like I know much.

The original Star Trek is older than I am, and I only know about it because it was on when I was a kid. The good ol' days when you had 13 channels on the TV and everyone went off air at midnight.

I was talking to a friend about this stuff. I'm in the age range where women actually have kids in college.

College??? Okay, that's scary. The generation you are teaching right now aren't old enough to remember 9/11.
03-13-2019 , 10:57 PM
My students think no one should be aware of anything before they were born.
03-13-2019 , 11:43 PM
I mean, there was just a Star Trek movie out a couple years ago...they don't even know the new iteration.
03-14-2019 , 01:58 AM
I'm not much better, but I'm not into the movie / tv culture either.

I recall when I was younger and how they made all those TV-show movies. There was the Beverly Hillbillies, Little Rascals, and others like that. The older people ate it up. The kids didn't get it at all.

I would think Star Trek is the same to the new generation. I don't know anything about Harry Potter, but the generation 10 years younger than me are nostalgic about it.

idk. But hey, you are a teacher. I'm sure you can get some old Star Treks on VHS and bring in an old RCA TV with dials and an antenna on it. It'll help them understand the zeitgeist of the time. :/

rr i dont really have an idea what undetitle means, but i think i identify with ogden nash more but do see some cummings in my becomings.

Outside of the original Star Trek TV show with Shatner/Nimoy when I was a kid I have never seen any of the movies or newer versions. But that is pretty much on purpose

Yeah, I'm with you there, mrb. I tried that "Next Generation" out a bit, just seemed totally fraudulent to me. That bald guy isn't the captain, James Tiberius Kirk is the ****ing captain! I just did a 3000 piece jigsaw of original cast characters and situations btw, was very cool remembering it all. Even has Spock's evil twin in there, everybody. That Kirk did all right with all the exotic alien ladies, that's for sure.

I have an evil twin, called Jack. He hides my keys and steals my money. Thinks it's hilarious.

charlie get some help the split personality thing can be helped with drugs. soon after you can be like all the rest of the people.

A 3000-piece jigsaw must be way more than three times as difficult than a 1000-piece one.
03-14-2019 , 11:00 AM
it would depend on the configuration of the pieces and their color.

a picture of the sky with all square pieces would about take 3 times as long if played as normal.

the more complicated things become the more they tend toward impossible to figure out.
take a woman for example.

Normally, that's what wives are for. Glad Jack pitches in and helps out.

Since some appear to be slogging in the enviable dead end death march through the swamp of nostalgia, I wanted to post these great photos I took at a bar – taken during a recent drinking binge with buddies.

Kioshk should especially enjoy the above.

Weird thing, I'm doing a 1500 right now that's roughly twice as difficult as the standard 1000 I typically do. In my storied jigsaw career to date, I've done that 1 3000, 2 2000s, maybe 3 or 4 1500s, a few 750s, zillions of 500s, but 1000 will always be the gold standard.

Haha tan tested and ready more in 72 than 60 I'd say.

edit: lol I just noticed that's 92 not 72, also that it's rested, not tested. Nothing gets past me.

Spring coming soon, but I'm not feeling it. No sense of renewal, just glumness. I may be late with our Spring thread, but don't attack me, Ray Zee.

John's hopelessness is his most entertaining feature. He needs to write a book on the subject*.

*But that may be hopeless.
