For a day or two, it's felt like early Fall here in New England. Distressing it is. I will miss summer.

Wow. 61 degrees now. But mid-80s for golf tomorrow. (BTW, quiting golf for twenty years has seriously hurt my game.)

Even though I hate the idea of remote teaching, it will be nice to stay in during our New England winter.

when it gets too cold for you, come visit me in Vegas and we'll hit the links! I'll have a room for you because my GF and I are buying a house....

Thanks, Dom. I may be there in June if conferences ever come back.

You will always have the same offer if I can buy a new condo in the coming year.

I think I may do just that, but I will need to drive home later, so . . . .

So update on the house hunt:

GF and I had "bought" a house we loved, but unfortunately, we had to walk away from it because there was too many things wrong with it that would cost a lot of money, like, $30k+ or more, and the sellers weren't willing to fix them.

But we found another house...and we love it....mid-70s, retro and cool, in a mid-Vegas part of town, residential but slightly upscale, with other vintage/retro houses that had been renovated. And less than 15 minutes from UNLV, where we both teach.

3BR, 2BA, 1850 sq. ft., two living rooms, a covered breezeway separating a two car garage, and just a general coolness throughout.

We're going to put privacy hedges up, maybe cover the 2nd driveway, but other than that, the place is pristine. It's only owner in 45 years was this 97 year old woman who recently died. The place is pristine. Like a time bubble from 1976. It's our style and right up our alley. Moving very soon.

Assuming it's not teeming with asbestos and needs the plumbing completely replaced, of course.

Nice, Dom. Hope it all goes well. I like that style, too.

I did drink tonight, Zeno. Two glasses of wine with one of my former chairs, who I mentored when I was the Dean. Fortunately, I was sober enough to drive home.

I've barely seen anyone from work in the past six months except during a few Zoom meetings, so it was nice to see her in person.

And I may have another drink tomorrow.

I've owned a bunch of mid-60s to mid-70s houses, and as I was looking at your pictures I was thinking that somebody had remodeled it and brought it back to spec. You could make it a museum. Even the cottage-cheese ceiling looks like it was applied yesterday. Nice find!

Thanks! But if the popcorn ceiling has any asbestos, it's coming down lol

Looks nice, Dominic. Place looks huge.
08-28-2020 , 08:24 AM
I'm concerned that Dom in that house is going to blow the cool scale.

I honestly don't think you will find any asbestos. If you do, it will be in floor tiles hidden underneath the carpet and will be inert and harmless. Which is not to say that people won't try to panic you into spending a fortune to get rid of it.

Hopefully the cat likes it. (:

I spent five minutes looking at the picture of the kitchen trying to figure out where you found somebody to install those retro cabinets...then it dawned on me that they were original.

Just out of curiosity, is there an electric outlet near the kitchen ceiling to serve an electric (plug-in) clock?

In the other house we wanted, there was asbestos in the ceiling, walls and tiles. The new house is 5 years older - 1976 - and it's possible it may not have any asbestos, but the popcorn ceilings usually have them. We'll have someone scrape it off if it does.

The carpets are coming up! We do not like carpeting. Especially decades old-light white/green carpet. Not great for cats lol. And there's concrete underneath, so we will polish it and throw some cool rugs down.

lol I know! You should see the Formica counter tops - they are perfect. No chips or stains - they look brand new.

I have no idea if there is an outlet there....

more pics:

The breezeway between the garage and house is cool...the garage has three built-in workbenches and a work sink.

The floral-looking room is the "sitting room, " and we are not keeping that furniture. It will be an aquarium/meditation room. My GF has 5 fishtanks lol. The master bedroom will also be redecorated. I've got a huge Danish bed frame/headboard/night tables that is all one piece, that will go great there.

We ARE keeping everything in that wood-paneled room you see in the other pics.
