Ray,

I think the waves are an expression of community and shared meaning, much like that 4th of July parade you attended, and it means you're part of the community whether you like it or not. So you must wave back. It's a requirement if you're going to tool around on your Harley. Don't be anti-social.

I attended no parades. No fireworks. I spent the 4th home alone, waving to no one. However, I did speak to at least two neighbors that day. One has a tradition of playing golf with his dad every 4th. I like that tradition, and I miss golfing with my dad.

I hope they got off of your goddamn lawn as you commanded them to Actually sounds a lot like my 4th of July. I did however take a nice long hike in a nearby forest preserve with a nice little lake. I got absolutely eaten alive by mosquitos and now have bites all over my neck and legs. That'll teach me to go outside

most know to stay off my place its my space. hey that would be a good name for a company. i bet you would make it big.

john i do like waves. but last year i gave up surfing and sold my boards and stuff. i wasnt any good and didnt enjoy it.
try not to talk to neighbors as they always want something.

i only go to parades to watch to see the fools dress up and hop around on pogo sticks and show off their old cars and horses and crap once a year, for the idiots that are stupid enough to go there to watch.

I live in a condo, and my neighbors are pretty nice people. Many have dogs, so that's a good thing. They never want anything from me, and a couple offer to give me rides while I'm banned from driving. (I have driven to the drugstore and market, but I keep within a two miles radius.)

Actually, I didn't mind being alone on the 4th. My old friends usually have a party, but my friend had surgery recently, so cancelled this year. I did miss them. And I was cheered considerably by an offer I did receive. Sometimes, it really is the thought that counts.

And today I need to be sociable. It's my great niece's second birthday. She calls me "Johnny" like everyone else in my family. And that comes as a surprise to my friends who only know the rather stolid, remote "John."

Damn mosquitoes, and it sounds like a nice day despite the bugs. I hope to get back to Chicago some time this year. I spent a few days there last June, but it was for a conference. I only had one day to go out with my friend who lives in Oak Park. We kinda flew through the Art Institute but had a ball crashing a convention for research oncologists at the rooftop bar at the Athletic Club. Even got a gift bag when we left.

I miss that too. When I was a kid and there were 8 teams in a league, I could keep up with the NL by reading 4 box scores every morning -- more if there were double headers. Keeping up with all of MLB required reading 8.

Now I barely know what's going on. The strike of 1994 pretty much extinguished my interest

plus many or most players were lifetime for their team. and didnt jump around for the best price. although a few did. so you rooted for a team of players you knew and loved.

An American hero for his help in destroying the Red Sox in 1967. Also the reserve clause.

Moose Skowron ruined more little league careers than any other player, simply by hitting so many above-his-head fastballs over the wall in Yankee Stadium.

he lived a couple towns over from me and would use the whirlpool at the high school.
so i got to go over and meet him and yack it up. he was very approachable and a good guy. a few of the other yankees would come also. like mickey.

I get to play cowboy a few times a year and it's fun. Really nice to do something different every now and then. I do own a few pointy toed boots but so not wear them much at all.
