Telling a story tonight, I mentioned the "ignominy" of having to drive a minivan one time. (It was a rental, and I had to drive six people around.) Everyone looked at me and had no idea what I was talking about. I have always felt that what I know is common knowledge. I have learned over the years to censor my language with students, but I've never really thought about it with friends and colleagues.

I'm wondering if any of you consciously limit your vocabulary. Zeno need not reply.

I did for about twenty years, and then decided it was foolish to (self censor (note the lack of a complimentary infinitive (**** it))). Now I just let her rip.

By the way, Chili Palmer drove a minivan. That's as cool as it gets.

It's almost impossible to find a station wagon these days -- another cool vehicle I love.

I share this. It can get me in a lot of trouble in a vast assortment of areas besides vocabulary.

My daughter responds to a text from her husband who told her she "peaked" his interest with "No, I piqued your interest."

Then she tells me that she blames me for her inability to let things go. Actually, she said, "I blame you for this ****." I accept the blame.

My eight year old granddaughter knows the meaning of "defenestrate," "incontrovertible," and we are working on "eponymous" now.

dont,,, if she starts using big words around her friends she wont have them for long. no body likes someone that sounds aloof. and of course acts smarter than them. then she will be ostracized and not even know its happening until too late or why.

No doubt. Loving the British Open. What a tight leaderboard. About 10 players in the hunt including Tiger.
