I think I get part of that. But ELDF has always tried to establish a certain cachet among its fans. If anything, it strikes me as at least as clubby as the lounge. And nobody has to genuflect to get into the lounge.

And the look at my watch threads and gadget threads seem to be pretty narrow too. Not everybody is into that, either. I mean, I can skim a sharper image catalog, but I don't consider it very broad or interesting. I don't really even consider it reading.

BBV4L has some in-group aspects to it too, but it's too chaotic to have any in-group dominate too much or last for long, IMO. They tend to reform and dissolve a lot. BBV4L kind of defines itself by not taking itself too seriously, so clubbyness isn't as much a natural over there as it is in the lounge, OOT, or ELDF. IMO anyway.

If you go into the OMG OMG OMG subforum/thread in BBV4L, there's maybe some clicquishness, but not too much. And anyway that's exactly the place for people who want that kind of thing in the first place, and it's walled off from BBV4L, so BBV4L still seems notably relaxed and non-exclusionary to me.

I think some of the oot posters felt his jokes needed to be contained . That and his movie reviews. I don't know why they were so uptight. They were really uptight! DB always cracked me up. He used to say the funniest wife jokes before he suddenly found his conscience.

Again not saying the clubby aspect of BBV4LIFE or TLDR is a bad thing per say given that is the reason for the creation I would assume. But it still is what differentiates it from the non clubby and more general forums in my view..OOT/SE/Poli/etc etc.

I don't notice the clubby aspect as much in ELDF besides certain threads that naturally I think will be a given to contain that tone - raw denim fetish peeps, fashionistas, etc.

All of those are clubs, man. The lounge is sometimes a club too. And honestly sometimes I like it least when it is. Even some of the strat forums are clubby(or at least they used to be -- I haven't played in years). It's just how much it manifests or is acknowledged. But it's there. It's in most high traffic forums I've seen and often quite the curse of them.

The need to be pre-approved by ELDF will always keep it a club, too. No other forum at 2+2 asks that or would probably even think of asking it. I don't think anyone's as worshipped as ElD on 2+2 either, and he doesn't exactly discourage it. Or at least he didn't use to. That provides an overlay of cult-like weirdness of its own.

I think it's largely misunderstood because when he created the ElD account it was openly as a gimmick to bother people. The other candidate name for the account was "The Hand of God," which perhaps would have been more openly ironic and been treated as such. It took off and was pretty funny, and as Blarg mentioned there was a certain amount of hero worship to it. El D, like many people who posted "back then," realized that the forum was turning less into a place for intelligent poker discussion and more of...something else. He decided to have fun with it and mess around, and many of us others decided to sort of check out and peek our heads in from time to time. It's interesting that the memory of all the events surrounding the EDF creation and the lounge are recounted like old war stories, or like the grimy details of a corrupt election. By interesting I mean mostly hilarious. It's hard to imagine being so worked up about subdividing forums on 2p2...but not as hard to imagine when I consider that I've certainly been worked up about forum related incidents in the past.

It is pretty funny, and people still go bananas if I even start talking about a new forum, though some take it in good part and we have a bit of banter about it. And to be honest, I sometimes talk it up just to annoy asstards, tbh....

There's a thread in ATF somewhere when I did a temp forum called 'advice and avatars' where Daryn in particular went mental that was very funny, with lots of moaning about me stealing oot steam etc. And the point is, I created such a ridiculous hybrid forum because I couldn't be bothered to listen to EXACTLY those people whine about it if it had any chance at all of becoming permanentl. In my naivety, I thought making it such a ridic forum pairing of subjects they'd just shrug and let it be.... I guess I rub people the wrong way

I dont really have a problem with the pre-approval thing given all it takes is a PM and actually shows a little commitment to wanting to post.

I would be surprised if a huge chunk of posters in the last year or two don't even know who ELD is

here's a link to the advice and avatar thread I referred to:

http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/55...rs-wtf-613544/

Note this started in the supersecret mod forum, and I was laughing my head off at the silly overreaction, and asked it to be made public so everyone could have a laugh

post #28 by Daryn directed towards a perfectly reasonable comment by another mod was particularly insightful

Quote:
dude go **** yourself

when a dribbling ****** asks what's wrong with ME i know i've done it right. anyone with a brain can sort it all out. i don't need to say anything else.

Also, post #53 by Mat Sklansky is informative about the origin of the Lounge, so brings us back on topic (seriously)

DB,

Pretty hilarious. Advice and Avatars for some reason really gets a chuckle out of me. I do remember actually people being like DIEBITTER HAS TO GO MAN! from oot and feeling like this: ???? but like I said, I never really kept up to date on the miscellaneous drama.

lulz Daryn getting freaked out in the very first few posts is definitely funny.

hey i like daryn so don't go makin fun of him in this thread! he is a good poster and his dogs are cute!

what i think is funny is how people get so upset when DB posts. It's hilarious. If he even says "hey, i've got an idea for a forum...",...or..."what if we...blah blah"...Lol! Or..."hey, i'm going to post a review of a movie i just saw"...omfg it drives them crazy. "This guy has to be banned! What an attention whore!" so funny. Most of the time he isn't even serious and they still go nuts. It's like pushing a button. (kind of like the over-reaction that Blarg gets whenever he says "getting a tattoo is stupid". It's so predictable.)

i don't know. daryn's posts in the Lounge have always been great and just a really nice contribution. (His posts in Solo's teaching thread...his dog pictures...other posts i've read of his). I've never seen him make a rude post in the Lounge.

haha i just remembered he did the "w" "t" "f" posts after the buttercup thing last night.

I only know Daryn from his posts here in the Lounge, and he seems like a smart decent guy to me. He was or is a math teacher, I remember.

it's a funny thread, and I posted it to show how incendiary things still are...all the bitterness is not a thing of the past.

However the bitter isn't entirely pervasive now like it used to be. I talk with killa about all sorts of things and get along with him just fine. Daryn is mostly sane too AFAIK and though sometimes a curmudgeon and I don't think he should have had the humor-bypass he's had, he's pretty solid imo.
