Lots of recommendations in this thread, though great, are on the wrong side of the map...
Two good bars in the Sherman Oaks/Studio City/North Hollywood area are

The Fifth (Whitsett and Riverside)
Nobar (Magnolia and Cahuenga)

There are plenty of dive bars in the Huntington/Newport area if you're into that sort of thing. And I hear there are lots of cute Asian girls in Irvine.

Like the other two versions, please include any and all reccomendations for great places to hang out, shop, eat, drink, excercise, etc. Please include at least a brief description of the places you list. Hopefully this will give me, and all the other LA area 2+2ers a good list of stuff to do.
''Commerce Casino''....Enough said.

If you like somewhat annoying college Asian girls, then you might like the Irvine Spectrum on Thursday nights. There's a Yardhouse in Triangle Square and also at the Spectrum too.

Dunno, I guess you could do the club thing. Do you have friends down here or are you looking to meet new people?

Bump for advice:

I am close to agreeing to move to LA with a good friend. Originally we were thinking Santa Monica, but a few people have mentioned Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach as places I would enjoy (I love La Jolla to give some barometer of who you are dealing with).

We are both in our late 20s, and single. I love the beach, he is from Wisconsin.

Oh, and he works at the SM airport, so that's basically our only sticking point for location.

Any advice or details on those places mentioned above would be greatly appreciated.

Damn I was hoping this was the thread where ActionJeff went on his diatribe against LA. I always enjoy reading that. Ok here it is:

I was in LA for one night and out of the hotel for under 4 hours and didn't do anything and it was by far the most miserable place I have ever been in. It is hard to explain how one can honestly believe that every aspect of a place they have barely seen can ooze negativity and human suffering and be so awful and distasteful, but there you have it. It was the air, the water. The airport. The way everything was set up. The people I encountered and the way they talked, the way they socialized, the way they functioned and their motives. I will never go there for anything unless it is absolutely forced on me, and I can't really even explain why, but the mere thought of being back there makes me feel physically sick.

I'm with Cliff Robertson, block it off and make it the worlds biggest prison.

I was thinking of going to L.A. for a couple of days after Vegas. I will be going there with two friends who are a bit on a budget, which I do not really mind that much, but I just want to know if there is enough fun things to do on a small budget.
I have been there ones, stayed in the huntley? Santa Monica, which was pretty nice, but probably too expensive, I already checked if The Standard Hollywood was available but there were no rooms available.

What would be a good value hotel for 3 guys age 21-25 who basically want to do a couple of tourists attractions but also go out at night?

And any recommendations for clubs which do not have a strict door policy/are not too expensive? I do not want to stand in line on my vacation only to not get in a club .

The Roosevelt in Hollywood, the W Westwood or the new W in Hollywood would be good. SLS is sick but pretty $$

The Roosevelt reservation system is not working for me, but the price at the W is $379 a night which would be too expensive for my friends.

Will it be possible to reserve a room for two with two queen beds and stay in there with three (I know this is easy to pull off in Las Vegas, but what about L.A.)?

I've never been to LA but Artie Lange in his book mentions that every restaurant has valet parking and they force you to use it. Obviously this is an overstatement but is this pretty accurate?

There are almost no free parking lots outside of the Valley, and onstreet parking is a major pain in the ass. So you'll usually pay for parking even if you don't valet (and using the valet where you eat/drink may get a discount).

kabouter,
Use tripadvisor.com and sort by price. I'm sure you'll find something acceptable in your buddies' price range.

Ah I did check prices, but I am not that familiar with L.A., I've been to Santa Monica a couple of days which was good, but I can't find any cheap hotels there. The hotels I came up with now are:

Custom Hotel (Near LAX so probably not good for our purpose?) $90/night
Best Inn hollywood (from what I can see it is a good location) $80/night
Venice on the beach hotel (location is ok, but a bit pricey for a 2 star hotel if you ask me) $140/night
Hollywood historic hotel (if the location is right this sounds like a winner) $60/night 5162 melrose avenue
Stay Hollywood (seems like a hostel to me) $80 a night for two rooms

But since L.A. is such a big city I'm finding it difficult to chose a hotel. I am thinking about spending 2 days at a hotel south of L.A. near the beach and then 3 days in the city itself, but I am afraid 3 days will be too short

kabouter -- try the Renaissance Hollywood on Highland. It's really nice and shouldn't be as expensive as the other ones recommended. (Prob closer to $200 than $300). If that's still too much, the Best Western Hollywood Hills or Hollywood Plaza are nicely located to a lot of places you'll want to go out.

The ones you listed look/sound like trashy fleabags.

Reread quite a bit of this thread before I realized how old it is. Lots of good advice AFAIK.

Surprised there was so little mention of LA area mountain hiking. About twelve years ago five buddies all north of forty years old practiced for a Mt Whitney hike by climbing (really hiking) about a dozen of the taller peaks in the San Gabrial Mountains.

Mt Baldy was a ball buster done from the bottom of the ski lift up the east ridge and then down the south trail but most of the rest were a fun and scenic hike if you're in half decent shape.

Highly recommended break from the poker grind.
