I think he said authenticwatches.com IIRC. Starchyy, I'm curious how your buying experience was with them? Any problems?

In the end, I didn't go with authenticwatches.com

I called up a bunch of ADs and went back and forth with a couple of them until I finally settled on a price. In the end, I got a really awesome deal, very close to the price authenticwatches.com offers. Decided to go with the AD since I get the full Longines warranty and can have them service it anytime in the future if needed.

#4 might be the most beautiful timepiece ever created. It's a little bit out of my price range though :-)

Ok, I asked this earlier in the thread but now, a month out, i need some ideas fast! I'm planning on buying my groomsmen watches as a gift in the $500-$800 range. Preferably metal bands, as most of us aren't fans of leather bands.

I took a look at a couple of places, and sales, but I can't really seem to find one that I really like. Something like this would be great ... of course not as expensive:

http://www.overstock.com/Jewelry-Wat...9/product.html

Thanks!

You didn't say what you're looking for other than metal band. Be specific!

What about Tissot? Good quality for reasonable price. There are some pretty sweet ones here:

I really like the styling but hate that they are almost all quartz movements.

I like the styling as well (its definitely the type of style i'm looking for). But I'm a total watch noob ... whats wrong with all quartz movements?

Any other watch companies similar to this one?

Looking for a watch for active-wear and going to the gym.

Was thinking about grabbing this:

http://www.amazon.com/Casio-G-Shock-...f=pd_rhf_p_t_2

Thoughts? Will it be too big or bulky on my wrist and get in the way? How is the price? ($90 shipped from a non-Amazon seller)

Nothing is "wrong" with quartz movements, in fact they are more accurate than mechanical movements.

My whole thing is that if I am spending good money on a watch I want it to be a mechanical masterpiece inside as well as looking good on the outside. If I wanted a watch just to look good alone, there are tons of cheap quartz watches that would fit the bill. I like the aesthetic, weight and elegance of mechanical movements although they aren't practical in a sense.

In the end, watches aren't about what is practical, otherwise the most expensive watches (tourbillon) wouldn't cost thousands because of a complicated mechanical movement designed to counteract gravity and instead would just throw quartz in there.

To me it is like nice clothes in a way, I am fine getting designer clothes for cheap but if spending good money I also want quality of design. Just like I would much prefer a $1,500 custom suit to a $500 quality suit which costs $1,500 b/c it is Gucci, I want a $500 watch with a nice mechanical movement, not just a battery.

I agree about the whole elegance of mechanical watches, I also prefer these. But when talking about watches in this price range, I'm not really going to get into the whole movement elegance and whatnot. I'm going to look more at the overall look/quality rather than what is on the inside. With Tissot, you know you are getting a good quality watch at a relatively cheap price, plus the new models look pretty awesome for casual/everyday wear.

I'm a huge fan of their sport style watches. Probably going to get one in the near future.

My TAG has a "swiss quartz movement" and it doesn't change my enjoyment of the watch at all. I wouldn't worry about that stuff unless I'm dropping 2k+

If you're not worried about it at less than 2k, why worry about it at 2k+?

I just remember wandering through a Rolex store when I was a teenager once (obv not there to buy anything... just wasting time on a long flight layover) and asking the salesman why the simplest looking watch was the most expensive.

And he said, "well, honestly, there really isn't that big of a difference between this watch at 100k and this one over here at 50k, except that the 50k watch looks more expensive. People spending that much on a watch don't care what it looks like. It's just more important to them that they are wearing 100k on their wrist. They could care less if anyone else knows it either."

I suppose that stuck with me when evaluating above, haha.

I like the GShock GW-M5600. That's your first one. It has the best tech of all the 5600's (old school square g-shocks) since it has atomic syncing and solar recharge. It comes in the normal LCD and also an inverted LCD.

I have the inverted one (GW-M5600-BC). Unfortunately, it isn't released in the US. Seiya has it for $250, but you should be able to find it cheaper - I got mine used off a watch forum for $150.

The non-inverted one is easier to read, but it may look like it's straight out of the 80s.. which may or may not bother you. Heh. It's also available in the US and is cheaper.

The negatives: The countdown timer will not do higher than 1 hour. The buttons are hard to press. The contrast on an negative LCD is not as good as a positive one.

If you want something bigger and chunkier, take a look at the 7900 series (I posted mine in this thread a couple of days ago).

Why don't they make quartz analog watches with second hands that move 5-6 times per second? That would be awesome IMO. (Spring drive doesn't count!)

It would drain the battery 5-6x faster.

Seiko makes some quartz chronos that do this when the chrono is active, FWIW.

Also, some quartz watches in the 70s ticked 2x per second iirc.
