Pro tip: Don't drop your watch on your concrete floor.

Going to cost $400 to repair my $1k Oris. Balls.

Crystal is broken, minute hand is broken, movement needs to be repaired.

What exactly is broken in the movement? (probably a balance staff, but find out for sure)

(If it makes you feel any better, the last watched I dropped and f'd was an Oris too, but a vintage one)

hi-res pics?!?

also, watchmaker, your input is greatly appreciated, but i don't agree w/ the japanese watch comment as PVN has been the #1 greatest contributer to this particular thread, and is the only one responding nicely to the well intentioned "i want a watch that is baller and costs $XXX, what should i get" nonsense.

i would like to counter that you instead post sub-$1000 examples of classic looking mechanical swiss watches instead, since it seems that most people are looking for that. and the ones that can spend more get responses anyway (none of them are japanese obv)

Beautiful 19th c Rounding Up tool on ebay @ 1100 obo

Doesn't look to be quite as primo as the one that sold at Christies 1353, but still looks pretty good.

Guys in Europe buy these old complex Watchmaking tools irrespective of their horological relations and display them as impressive examples of mechanical art (which they are) in offices, dens or whatever. I've collected a few over the years. Here's my way old miniature treadle/watchmakers lathe, which is about 100 years older than that.

LOL, that's really funny.

Kinda depressing that so many people openly admitted to not knowing what a ****ing lathe was though. I swear to god, with each passing generation, we get more and more *****.

-I know nothing about straps, so for now I'm open to any of them (black) but I'd like to hear suggestions on why certain ones may be better

I am a 21 year old student and I work part time at a restaurant.
Just throwing that out there so you have an extremely vague idea of the level of wear and tear it may go through

Thanks

This is a watch that I found that I find nice, it called Leather Chronograph by Fossil. Its a 43mm case, is that considered big? It also sells for 105, which is less than I was planning on spending, but thats fine.

Basically, I want a watch that I can wear to school in jeans and a tshirt or wtv but also wear the same watch when I go out and have it look equally good. I also decided I prolly wont be wearing it too work so dont worry about it being too delicate.

Anyways, let me know what you guys think of this watch and any reccomendations similar to this watch would be great.

Looks pretty good for an IWC Portuguese ripoff.

Is it common to have a cache of bands with which you swap in and out certain watch faces?

One of the watches I purchased came with a band I don't care much for and I was thinking of purchasing a few bands individually.

Does anyone know if a watch winder has any effect, positive or negative, on the lifespan of a watch? I can potentially see both being true. Or does it have no effect and they're simply a matter of convenience so you don't have to set it each time you put your automatic watch on?

No doubt Watchmaker can provide a professional opinion but IMO it should be a net benefit.
I have been told to always keep the watch wound up as it ensures that the lubricants are continually distributed around the moving parts instead of coagulating somewhere leading to increased wear and tear when the movement is actually moving.

If u are going with a quartz watch, I think you get some pretty good value with Fossil. They look good, are inexpensive, and come with an 11 year warranty. This way, you can even buy a couple of them so you get some variability in what you wear.
