I was hesitant on the tudor as i had never seen one in person, but the red bezel and gold indices look even better in person imo. Now i just want to find the OEM strap/deployment

So I looked up online what the customs cost would be to order a seiko sarb from Japan to UK and it looked like 4.5%. My parcel just arived after a little over a week and they charged me;

Just to say got letter saying they can only deliver your watch after the customs payment is received. It comes to £58.64 (£45.14 Import Tax + £13.50 Clearance Fee)

This works out at about 24% customs fee on a cheap watch!! Should I pay this or argue the cost? Is it normal?

I own none of these 4, but from the little I know of high end watches, this seems like a snap call

Thoughts on this Omega seamaster? What other watches in this style in the same price range are there? I watched a video and the guy was saying its just the standard boring watch everyone gets as one of there first nicer watches? What is the general feeling people have of this watch?

Very nice looking watch, but have to agree it seems a bit "standard", a watch a typical man would buy when they have enough money to buy a really nice watch.

To me, that doesn't take away from it being a nice watch. It's just nothing special or different. Honestly, it looks like a standard low end Rolex type. Once again, there is nothing wrong with that. I think if you like it, that's all that matters.

The guy in the video is probably just a watch snob. I try very hard not to be a snob about anything, it's a bad way to be.

I really want to get myself a watch, but I really do not want to or am in the position to spend several thousand on an accessory. Not even a couple hundred. Now I understand I won't get anything really decent by this thread's standards for $150 or w/e, but IF I were to buy myself a watch because I prefer it over going watchless, and that was indeed my budget - give or take - then what should I look for? Does it even matter at that range, or should I simply go for whatever fashion watch looks best in my eyes, and then save up some money for a "real" watch?

There are plenty of decent timepieces for $150. It would help if you gave more hints about what you like, though. If you could point out pieces in this thread then people can guide you towards similar styles in your price range.

Well, in general I like it on the simpler side. I don't like metal straps, and I don't like it too colorful or glowing, etc.. Doesn't mean it has to be plain though. Good idea to point out pieces in this thread. Just from scanning the last ~1k posts, I liked these models:

not a fan of the gold, but other than that:

And yeah I want to go for good quality - I will of course be willing to spend a bit more if it means I get a superior product, but still land in the ballpark of $150 to $200 if possible.

no love lost for Breitlings here i guess. I really liked the B01 but i want to get into that jlc or pml and i think the IWC will trade easier in that direction. but yes tudor>tag hands down.

And who the hell cares if people think that smp is "standard"? It's a cool watch and if you like it, get it. HAve you checked out the PO's, those are nice as well.

Look for Orient or Seiko imo.

Toedder, it's tough to get them with the various functions you seem to like for that price. I'd recommend the Orient Bambino which is currently on sale for a good price at $139. Sign up for emails at longislandwatch.com and I'm sure they will send a 10% off code out for Black Friday/Cyber Monday. If you wanted to save up and splurge, that Graf Zeppelin watch you like in my photo would be $495 with the 10% off, and that's the price I paid and place I got mine. I love mine and think it's a great value.

I'm not big on Orient's love of skeleton lately, but I wouldn't part with the ones I have.

personally i don't like diamonds on a man's watch, but it depends: are you a black guy?

black guys can get away with wearing diamonds more easily than any other race of guys. isn't there a thread about this?

It's not so much the diamonds that's the issue for me. Its more that it suffers from the same issue as the Movado museum piece in that its difficult to tell time and thus becomes much more of a fashion piece.

I don't see how it's terribly hard to tell time with those pieces? Not a big fan though, never seen a Rado I really liked.

Thanks guys. I see I have some thinking to do. I'm not in the US, so with $30 shipping and 19% import tax longisland isn't that attractive, but I'm going to search it over here. I'm tempted to go for a Zeppelin, but with moving in December, I have a lot of other stuff to spend money on. Will think it trhough, thanks for the input!

Haven't been around in a while, but now shopping for a watch.

I'm (hopefully) about to bink an Eliminator league (brag) and want to buy a nice watch with some of the money to celebrate. I work in an office ~50% of the time with the rest in the field meeting with clients (developers mostly - housing/commercial growth related industry). Usually dressed in slacks/jeans and a button down/golf shirt. I'm looking to spend $3k-$7k on this, but the budget can be stretched if I fall in love (we're spending free money for picking winners here, might as well get something I like).

Currently my only watch is a very basic Raymond Weil Freelancer. I have a leather backed sailcloth band that I use to switch it up with the steel one. Only thing that I don't like about it is that it lacks a date window which is a feature I'm considering a must have on my new purchase.

Here are the watches that have caught my eye over the years:
- Omega PO Chrono
- Rolex 16750 (16760 if I can find it)
- Rolex Submariner
- Omega Speedmaster
- Zenith Pilot Big Date Special
- Nomos Tangomat Datum

Any feedback or experiences with them would be great. Also looking for buying tips on the secondary market and possible suggestions for other stuff to look at (Can you get an IWC Pilot/Portuguese in that range?).

i vote nomos tangomat datum of that list. don't own it, just think it's a beaut.

I love Nomos and while their automatics are still a nice value buy, I think their handwound models are even better buys. My favorite Nomos remains the 35mm Orion or 35mm Tangente.

If you must have the automatic, go for the no date one as imo the datum ones look weird with the date at slightly smaller font than the other numbered indices. Also, be aware that Nomos does not have a traditional quickset date (you will have to wind time past 12am, wind back a few hours, wind forward again). For these reasons, I don't think the date complication is worth the $600 premium.

The PO chrono is nice but its a big big thick ass watch. Its just not very versatile.

Anyways, if it was my money, I would probably get a used Omega Speedmaster Pro 3575.50 and a used 35mm Nomos Tangente/Club/Orion handwound no date for about $4000 to $4500 total.

If you are really wanting a IWC though, this double chronograph off ScreaminAsian's link is very interesting and IMO priced nicely.

Not a huge fan of IWCs with non modified ETAs (yes I know they supposedly finish these anyways, but if there is no added complication and its all hidden away behind a solid caseback, whats the point) and the 8days ones are slightly above your budget even used.
