That'd be hot if it wasn't a ****ing skull.

RM does that too, are people really spending $400,000 on a skull and crossbones watch?

That was my thought too. In fact I didn't see the skull at first and liked it. Then...not so much.

Hublot has another one with a skull covering the whole face. It, and the RM are truly ugly.

I kinda like the one I posted with the smaller skull. Although I wouldn't buy it.

What is the case? I thought it was just Hublot stealing forged carbon from AP but upon second glance it looks like it might be a beadblasted DLC with perlage??

man. i dont even.

Kinda funny how that left strap screw looks like it's halfway out, though.

I thought this was pretty clever, it hadn't really dawned on me before that blind people wouldn't be able to tell the time.

A watch for blind people

Quote:
The watch has a stark, circular titanium face. There are no hands. There are no numbers. Around a groove in the centre a ball-bearing rotates to mark the minutes. Around the edge of the watch, another ball bearing rotates to tell the hours.

if you're blind, just get a minute repeater (patek preferred) ldo..

For minute repeaters, my favorite has to be the Voutilainen decimal repeater.

Views on Chinese Watch Market

This is just a collection of my thoughts on the Chinese watch market. Originally I was going to finish my TR but there is a shortage of pictures so I didn't want to write it in TR form anymore.

Summary is Chinese people love watches. I traveled to my wife's hometown from Shanghai and even in this small town of 100,000 (tiny by Chinese standards), I was able to find a watch repairman in the middle of a farmer's market.

What is strange is that most of the high end watches sold in China are sold as gifts and rarely something that is bought for ones self. For example, I met my cousin in law who is recently married. His salary is probably 1/10th mine in the US, yet he wears a rose gold VC. How did he acquire a watch that costs 4 years of his salary? A gift from his father in law. I must admit I did have a twinge of jealousy flash.

The rampant consumerism in China is fairly astounding. Imported Watches sell at 120% of US prices while imported cars sell at 200% to 250% of US prices. A BMW 7 series costs $200,000. This is not even fully due to import tax. Most of the time it is due to the manufacturer knowing that demand has decoupled from price in China, or rather if there is correlation, it is in the opposite direction.

Thus, what I end up finding is a mass of watchbuyers who are not very knowledgeable about watches, but chase the priciest brands. At the very high end, you have very knowledgeable collectors but the masses base their purchase decision on price. If it costs more, it must be better.

This extends to things such as alchohol as well. Lafite sells extraordinarily well in China. When watching a Chinese TV series, if one of the main characters has "made it" the first thing he does is go to a restaurant and order a bottle of Lafite.

Back to my cousin in law. He asks me what watch I am wearing after showing me his VC. I show him the Seagull 187s. Though he studies watches, he only focuses on luxury brands and thus he does not recognize it. I tell him that its a Chinese watch made in Tianjin and he is taken aback at my choice. My other cousin in law walks overm joker that he is, and quips "man, I actually think the Chinese watch looks better".

If you have a chance to visit the Maison Patek Philippe in SHanghai, do so. I was unfortunately unable to due to time constraints. It sits alone on the most expensive part of Shanghai away from all the other watch brands.

I did pass by it while we were taking engagement photos.

you can see the steel bridge in the background.

I regret not visiting.

But you can get somebody else's report on visiting it.

I'm bored so I'm going to pick a brand and name my favorite watch from that brand. Feel free to join in.

Tudor
My favorite Tudor is without a doubt the Pelagos.

I love that it has it's own design language unique to Tudor and separate from Rolex. The hour markers are all square. The bezel markers are completely lumed. The bezel is ceramic. The innovative clasp is arguably superior to the one on the Sub.

I like it so much more than the Black Bay which feels a bit too homage oriented for my taste and doesn't really introduce anything new.

It's probably the best diver with an ETA movement around IMO.

trying not to get a racist ban here.. i'm also asian btw.

chinese consumerism culture is pretty bad but honestly i see it in a lot of cultures. whether it be suburban keeping up with the jones attitudes, hip hop culture to the bottle service scene. it's pretty rampant.

currently the chinese are getting very monied and there's a freaking billion of them so it might seem to skew harder that way (hence that amazeballs patek boutique)

Oh yeah. It's not even just the first growths. You'll see random $40 $50 bottles labeled with just Imported From France with no AOC label or region designation. I was treated to one and I didn't have the heart to say anything.

Wanna talk counterfeit?
Sandpaper.

Yes, fake 3M Sandpaper. People have been finding out on eBay that their stuff is not real 3M sandpaper.
