I'm also curious about the legitimacy of a site. I drunkenly bought this watch from watchmaxx.com last night. Did a quick bit of research and it seemed like it had received decent customer feedback.

The same watch is available at pretty much the same price from authenticwatches.com, though, and after reading this page I'm wondering whether I should try to cancel my order and buy through these guys instead?

Anyone else wear a vintage watch for everyday use ?
I have a 1950's Rolex Oysterdate Perpetual that used to belong to my dad, I wear it most days, I love the look of it as well as the obvious sentimental value

UG Tri Compax a lot lately. My dads been wearing the same Omega Speedmaster every single day since the 70's. Beat to ****, but oozes character and still +/- 5 sec per day.

got one of these guys as a small gift.

Don't know fashion too much, I'm usually a t-shirt and jeans type of guy. Could I wear this as an everyday watch?

I'm working in fine dining and need a new durable and cheap (prefer< $400 if possible) but fits the setting. I'm constantly washing my hands and need something that I don't have to think about getting a little wet.

My old work watchwould not cut it since I wear a suit now.

I need something that won't look terrible if it takes a slight ding in the 38-42mm size range.

Some of the candidates so far:

Like this one, I just hate orient's logo though.

I like, but not very modern and may seem out of place on a metal or synthetic band.

I've had my eye on the Stowa Antea 390 for a while as a person watch (@ $650), but I worry getting it wet. I also think it is a watch that dings would look particularly awful.

Also, I haven't had the best experience with metal bands and arm hair in the past, and also don't love the feel. Anyone have expeience with aftermarket mesh bracelets in that regard?

I have been looking more into these Seagull watches and really like the M199S. Unfortunately I have always been a much bigger fan of automatic movements rather than hand (watch experts, feel free to convert me, don't know all that much). I really wish Segull made a watch like the automatic 170S, but with the face and numerals of the 199S.

Looking at < $1k watches for dressy or formal work occasions.

What do you guys think of Tissot automatics? Where does Tissot compare against other brands in the same price range, such as Seiko and Hamilton?

Depends on your wrist size. For me anything under 40mm looks too small on my wrist. Depends on the style, brand, etc as to what average size is. Avg for a diver watch is usually around 43mm from what I have seen while dress watches are usually smaller, around 38-40mm.

For me:
<40mm - small
40-44mm - good size, looks best on me
45+mm - large

I have ~7" wrists.

i really don't like the look of most modern Rolex watches, too busy (and severely out of my price range). That said, i really like the old school Rolex's. There are a few on eBay and elsewhere that i've looked at, however, im incredibly ignorant as to what i should be looking for, and there are so many knockoffs i really wouldn't feel comfortable buying one. If yourself or anyone could share some advice and expertise on what to look for in the watch and the seller, that'd be mighty swell.

I'm going to ship one of these in shortly, break it down and decide for myself.

There's a lot of voo-doo and brand-lore in the watch game.
One too many people whose opinion I value told me this is a very expensive watch (from a mechanical standpoint) for a next-to-nothing price... Will make up my own mind and post report here.

Obviously, the Chinese suck at Branding... Sea-Gull; just ****ing awful, but the timepiece itself is supposed to be a great entry level complicare.

HAMILTON JAZZMASTER OPEN SECRET

Thoughts? To me it has a lot of detail but still seems clean and uncluttered.

Tissot make reasonable watches using standard ETA movements. Servicing them shouldn't be too expensive and they should be reliable.

I just got a Couturier in black with leather band and really like it. The non chrono version is cheaper and looks more "formal".

HENB - I'm a Euro, I bought my Rolex from here.
http://www.tz-uk.com/forum/index.php

You'll need to find the equivalent for watches from the US, however TZ UK has a "Heroes and Villains" forum where people basically get recommendations as to being reliable or not. You're also better off buying from a watch geek - you'll generally get an honest appraisal on the state of the watch and they are priced to sell to collectors, so you'll get a decent price and are very unlikely to buy a fake. I bought mine with no hassles whatsoever.

I'm no expert on watches, a friend of mine is and he asked me what style I wanted and showed me various different brands and models.

Gilt has a bunch of Oris watches on major sale (50%+ discounts). Everything is priced in the $600 to $1500 and there are some really nice looking pieces. Gilt's model is to take high end merchandise which doesn't sell out and offer it on a first come first serve basis. They are unique in that they have good relationships with the retailers/manufacturers so I think these watches will have factory warranty (not totally sure). You can go to the site at www.gilt.com and sign up, or if anyone wants an invite I would appreciate getting to send them (I get $25 credit after anyone I invites 1st purchase).

One of the more expensive Hamiltons though at ~1700.

You get a 7750 movement though and great looks.
