Preface: I know nothing about watches.

Looking through this thread, I was offended by how ugly so many of these expensive watches are. So many are way too busy. The first rule of design is (like many other things) keep it simple, stupid.

the pp is timeless. the other two are simply dull and boring. simple doesn't equate to tasteful. they might not be garish like breitling, but they are a little tacky.

That patek would look nicer if it weren't on a gorilla's arm.

Maybe you shouldn't be 'offended' by something you admit you know nothing about?

There is no first rule of design. If there was, it wouldn't be a worthless cliche. Different facets of watch design appeal to different people.

If you admit you are clueless about a subject, maybe your first opinion shouldn't be "everyone else is wrong".

Yeah, part of the beauty of watches is their mechanical complexity.

I'm really enamored with this JLC Master Compresser W-Alarm. I haven't really seen an alarm on an automatic before this one. Any other good ones out there?

Google around for Davidsen. He sells "homage" pieces which are basically fakes with dials that don't say "panerai." They have chinese movements which are pretty decent.

I hear he sells versions with full-on fake dials as well if you're into that.

i dont understand how a metal band can possibly make a watch $1-1.8k more expensive than its leather band equivilant

sale price on Authenticwatches.com are $5075 and $3275 respectivly (difference in price differes on other sites)

I hate:
The grotesque "checkered" type texturing on the bezel. Just ****ing awful.
Roman Numerals
Black Second Hands
The date complication on that particular watch.

I agree with most of your opinion - that being said if someone gave me the watch as a gift I would definitely happily wear it...

Some pretty cool "budget" watches on this site...I noticed one of our tactical unit officers wearing one the other day. I'd never heard of the company before that.

--edit, by budget, I meant < $1k

I'm liking Zeniths more and more. Such as:

Also, you may or may not like Corum watches, but these videos of some Corums being manufactured are pretty cool:

Artisan

Golden Bridge

Marquetry

Because the kind of people to spend $3k+ on a watch are the type to spend $1.8k on a "non-aftermarket" metal band without blinking.
