Love the IWC. A concern you might have with it is that it's pretty big for dressy occasions at 42.3mm and 13.9mm thickness. How big depends somewhat on the size of your wrists. JLC second, Breitling third (don't like the crooked date placement). Wouldn't consider any of the others.

of those choices i'd go cartier.. seriously..

though for that money i'd just pay up for a rolex daytona which i consider the most perfect 10k watch around.

Make sure you try them all on before you buy it. Watches have a feel/look to them you can't appreciate from pictures.

out of your choices, I really like the Breitling as thats pretty much the only Breitling I do like. I don't know what movement is in the Ballon Bleu. I've seen a coworker with the brown version of the Ballon Bleu Chrono and it looks very nice but I don't know enough about it.

if you like chronos, why go for a non chrono JLC? when the chrono is at 8.1K

the ones you listed are really apples and oranges. First figure out what complication you want.

You're spending more than $5000 on a watch. don't you want to know what it does in addition to what it looks like?

By the way, I like Pokerplease's Daytona suggestion but you're really looking at 12.5k.

Another option, Zenith Captain Winsor

I might wait for the boutique edition version with the numeral hour indices though as I think that looks better but not the gold one since thats an entirely different price range.

great suggestion. had a XX transatlantique for a while and i enjoyed my time with it.. but it's one of those watches thatmakes me think of a quote in that john mayer video.. "the first 10-12 watches where you think you're amassing a collection"

I vote for finding the IWC used in the $7,500 range. You know someone who has an IWC is going to take good care of it, and he'll have eaten much of the depreciation. Go for whatever is your top choice used and you'll be more satisfied in the long run knowing you got the one you really wanted.

I agree with you there, pokerplease. I mean honestly nothing is going to have the collectibility of a Daytona. The thing with the Daytona is I wish they would put the numerals on the SS version since I feel the version with Numerals look so much better.

Movement wise I feel the Rolex 4130, the Breitling B01, and the JLC are probably technically the finest. The Rolex 4130 and the Breitling B01 have a longer power reserve at 72 hours vs 60hours for the JLC but I like the thinness for the JLC movement. I think 39mm x 8.6mm are wonderful proportions for a dress chrono.

Aren't Cartier and IWC both owned by Richemont group now? I notice so many similarities in their watches sometimes. Nothing offhand but I definitely remember. Obviously Lexus != Toyota but still.

Anyways, the correct answer is Hublot, get something different.

really agree with the poster suggesting to try them all on. Watches look so much different irl compared to some small pictures online. I'm a bit biased but I think that's a terrible pic of the Hublot.

I'd go for the Hublot or the IWC

Don't know how to adjust the month hand, looks like it has gone other way and it's not responding at all (actually moves to the right month when configuring, but goes back to the same pos. when click back at neutral pos.) . It happened while I was trying to add the correct date.
Every other hand and watch overall works just fine.
Prolly need to repair or I just don't know how to use the manual to set it right?
Have used it 6 months every day, 1st time this problem occures.

I really only wanted to spend 5-6k when i started looking, but i obviously have pushed that limit based on the ones i listed. I really like how the breitling looks but its pretty massive at 14.5mm thick.

If money didnt matter i would prob flip a coin between the JLC and the IWC 7 day, but i dont know if i have the heart to fork over 10k to a grey market site. Although if i ever get my 6k back from ftp i will prob pull the trigger.

A chronograph is a stop watch. There are watches that look like a chronograph but is not a chronograph such as the IWC 7days. The power reserve indicator is fashioned to look like a chronograph subdial. This isn't to say the 7days is inferior to a Chrono as its just a different complication. Namely it has a 7 day power reserve when fully wound.

So you should decide on what you'll get more enjoyment out of.

anyone have experience selling watches? i've got a few from the glory days of online poker that I never wear anymore (for most of them I only have the watches and no papers/boxes). is ebay my best bet? local high end watch store? is there a preferred online marketplace for this kind of thing?
