Have owned it.. cool watch for the price.. however it is huge. Also that crown, if you've never had diamond crown like that, takes some getting used to.

Spotted a Sinn "in the wild" while playing at the Hollywood in Kansas City this weekend. Complimented the owner on it. He said I was the first person to notice it in the 5 years he's had it. I think I made his day!

The Sinn bracelet is just the nuts. I miss that most not having mine any longer. If it wasn't for getting sick of the 'lego' hands, I would never have sold it (U1).

"Bremont Codebreaker

Paying homage to World War 2 era British codebreakers, this new chrono from Bremont uses actual parts from Britain’s once secretive Bletchley Park Government Code and Cipher School. The rotor of the watch is made from the wheel of an original Enigma cipher machine, while the crown is inset with a piece of pine taken from the floor of the fabled wartime facility. "

$19k.

I have the chance to pick up a used Tag Carrera 1887 v2 black dial in excellent condition with papers for $2250. Should I pounce? I like the watch, but also like the V3, and don't have enough experience with pricing on these to feel real confident. that a good deal, or can I do better? Given that I like the aesthetics, good/bad buy?

Are Fossil watches good or bad?

I am looking for a new watch. I noticed this tread and figured I would get some brand suggestions for under $300.

^^^ Agreed. My Mako has only gained 13 seconds in the past 14 days, pretty amazing.

Hope they get yours back in good shape soon Gaddy.

I was in the mall today and my girl likes Fossil so we took a look around the store. They had some new swiss-made watches for $700. Didn't look bad, but obviously there's ones I would prefer for that price point.

For $300 or less, there's some good options in Orient and Seiko. Some Hamiltons and Tissots also are right around there, maybe a bit more.

Probably going to be at least another week before I get back my Mako, but it's being repaired by Orient under warranty and I'll just have to pick it up from the OrientUSA headquarters a few blocks away when it's done.

Watch repair question:

Freaking dropped my watch a foot off the ground and broke it the other day (onto concrete of course). The watch looks, winds and runs just fine, but the minute hand has come loose. If I shake the watch the minute hand jumps around. If I set it down it runs as expected though.

Really don't know too much about watches, anyone know if this is a major fix or not? It's a $400 Seagull 1963 so not willing to spend too much to fix it but I do really like the watch.

Are high end local jewelers good places to get watches fixed?

Thanks.

TR will be interesting on this. I suspect you will have to send it to Sea-Gull. Doubtful you will find a jeweler who will touch it.

My Omega Railmaster stopped running about 6 months ago and I just finally had the money to pay for its repair as I finally graduated and have a job. I brought it into Tourneau on May 1 and they told me it should be about 6 weeks because they will be doing typical maintenance and that ought to be it. They send the watch in to the manufacturer to do the repairs. In the beginning of June they changed the date I should receive it to early July and I just checked on the status again a few days ago and they bumped it to the end of July. Neither time was because they found anything new wrong that needed to be done.

I'm pretty annoyed 6 weeks turned into 4 months by now. Is a timeline like this at all typical for watch repair/maintenance or am I just getting unlucky?

Other than the bracelet, is there any difference in the Omega 2054.50 and 2254.50?

No, they are exactly the same otherwise.

A watch for the blind. Dunno why they made it look so good.

P.S. I got some Stuhrling Automatics for my groomsmen. They look real sharp, and were only 60$. They'll last through the wedding and reception right?

I'm brand new to watches and want to get one as mainly jewelry to wear when I want to look nice. Here are some criteria/questions I have
  • I probably won't wear it to work very often, just when I go out.
  • I'm thinking of one in the <$500 range but could be convinced to go over if I'm in love.
  • I love the submariner look so the Steinhart Ocean 1, Mako XL, Invicta types seem appealing right now.
  • Metal chain-link (dunno what it's called) or leather band? Personal pref?

So, any other good suggestions?

For informal things like clubbing, general pub stuff, and such, I'd stay with a metal band. Leather looks awesome on dress watches, but that's not what you're looking for. If you decide you don't like the look of metal, you could get a rubber or nato strap.

The watches you listed are divers, which is good, as there's lots of good watches available at good prices there. I love my Halios Laguna, but it's a bit out of the price range you're looking for and the company was a bit of a pain to deal with (delays and really poor communication). You might be able to do something used, though, so figured I'd mention it as an option anwyay. Seiko Monster (orange or black) are go-to options in that price range. I have the black monster and have been happy. Right around your price point, and a bit less commonly seen if that matters to you, is the Hamilton Scuba Auto.

Stay away from Invicta. They're crap.

May be just me but I'm not a fan of metal bands, until you get to like ridiculously nice watches. Kinda has a trying too hard image in my book. But ymmv of course.
