That's me!

I still don't know anything about watches but need something to wear with a suit - what should somebody who knows nothing about watches get to fulfill that requirement?

black/gold seems right based on the rest of my required accessories...

I've been looking at the Hamilton Khaki series. Although they are arguably more active styled watches and strictly speaking not dress watches. But I reckon something like the Khaki Field Auto with a leather strap sort of pulls it off.
I have a Hamilton Khaki King on black rubber for general wear. Love it and Hamilton is decent value.

Have one of the lower end Seagulls (M177S in black). Works great but the band is a little cheap and stiff (also there's a fingerprint on the rotor that is visible with moderate observation). Although fits the purpose of a cheap automatic dress watch that's clean.

I read a lot on watchuseek and elsewhere prior to purchasing and nearly everything I saw was that Seagull didn't fit the typical mold of chinese-made and they were of moderate quality.

Traversing various forums for dress watches in the $500 or less range, I'm currently looking at the following list. Tried to pick some photos that better show what the watches actually look like, rather than overly glossy studio shots.

I would be looking to get a black leather strap and black/white/cream face (not yet decided). I tend to lean towards black face, but some watches are just very lovely in white/cream as well.

- Hamilton Khaki Field

-
Tissot Visodate

- Alternative: Various vintage Visodates

- Sea-Gull
819.351 (newer version of M177s)

-
Christopher Ward C9 Harrison Automatic

-
Seiko SARB033/035

- Orient Star Classic

- Steinhart Marine 38

I love the

- Christopher Ward C9 Harrison Automatic
- Steinhart Marine 38

They look really good, completely my type of watches.

Yup. Both very elegant watches, imo. The Steinhart is 38mm while the C9 is 43mm, I believe. For my wrists, that definitely makes me side with Steinhart.

The Hamilton looks too busy for my liking. I think the better Hamilton options for you include these: Intra-Matic, Timeless Classic,

The Tissots are solid choices. Don't know anything about Christopher Ward but I do have a thing for blue seconds and that looks pretty stylish (though again a little large). No on the Sea-Gull and Orient. The Seiko is decent. Of course, when it comes to Sarbs, I like the splash of the 065. I think the Steinhart is pretty hot, but it may be too splashy for a lone dress watch with the blue hands and crown.

I have no built up reputation on any watch site or as an ebay seller. What are my options for selling my Longines?

I would suggest making a solid post, good pictures and use watchuseek or timezone. Offer some referrals (someone else you may know on those sites) even if you have not sold a watch to them.

Make the posting looks legit enough with care and details, you may be fine regardless.

I can't understand any amount of hate for the AP Royal Oak. It's an awesome watch.

And LOL at diluted. They make less than 30K watches a year across all of their models.

As for the other conversation, I don't have any direct experience, but my brother in law is a big fan of his Christopher Ward and it always seems like a really nice piece.

the stunning amount of AP limited editions churned out annually has turned me off the brand as well. i wouldn't say diluted though..

a few years ago i would have told you that i'd one day have a RO in my collection. at this point it'll probably never happen.

Meh. I don't have a problem with lots of LE/SE runs, so long as the numbers aren't crazy per edition.

The Lionel Messi RO is crazy nice.

i have an issue with too many LE/SE runs AND crazy numbers per edition (cough omega).

a ton of those LEs are super sweet, but the price tags are a lil crazy and after a few years most of them take massive depreciation hits.. i'm too much of a depreciation/liquidity nit to go down that route.

The RO is one thing but they do the ROO special edition footballer/ random fighter ****/dude who races cars/select country special edition random color thing to death and it's kinda gross. Basically Hublots whole game plan with the bang.

Biggest beef I have with the RO is it's lack of waterproofness, if one can go dunk in the water with a 7k Milguass seems stupid you cant with a RO, a watch named after a damned boat.

I don't care for the shape of the bezel. It looks very blocky and unaesthetic to me.

I don't understand why that Hamilton Khaki keeps getting lumped in with dress watches...

I guess it should go under the category of business casual instead. It's not a pure dress watch but with a leather strap it does pull off the dressy look, IMO.

Anyone else dislike the Tissot logo on the Visodate? I prefer the other logo that they use on that watch.

I prefer the date window on the SARB.

Yeah, I don't mind the Tissot font. If there's anything I don't like on that watch, it's the huge date window.
