In the sub-$100 range, the 5600 is the "classic." the 5600e is the basic no-frills model. 5600J adds solar and radio sync without adding much cost. I'm kinda down on the J model, though, because the display is kinda weird (you can't see the date and day at the same time) and the case is slightly "weird" to accomodate the antenna which keeps you from being able to use the strap adaptors or bracelets. There's a GW-M5600 that is more expensive than the J but has the normal case dimensions and a slightly saner display.
The 6900 series is very popular but I don't really care for it too much because the display is small and cluttered and too much of it is taken up with the useless "eye" indicators.
Personally, I really like the 7900 series. They're big and easy to read. There seems to be a pretty big difference between the G-7900 and GW-7900s, though, which is unusual (GW generally (outside of the frogman line) indicates the watch has solar and atomic but in the case of the 7900 there are a bunch of other features the G doesn't have).
Also worth checking: gulfman 9110. Pretty much the same features as the 7900 but a smaller, titanium case.
Of course, if you REALLY don't care about price, get the GWF-1000 frogman IMO.
One other thing, I would advise you to avoid negative displays. THey look cool on display but they're a pain in the ass to read in the real world IMO.
Also, you may want to check out the protreks. Some pretty cool watches there IMO. If the protreks pique your interest, you might also check out Suunto, makes some even more sophisticated watches (they call them "wrist top computers").
