Actually a watch draft with each drafter limited to a total budget of like $50,000 would be pretty fun.

But anyways lets play along

1. Dress watch - Patek Phillipe Calatrava

2. Dive Watch - Sinn U1 PVD

3. Beater Watch - Seiko Spork

4. Chrono - Zenith Striking 10th

5. Aviation inspired - the new Stowa flieger Chrono

6. Guilty Pleasure - Casio Edifice Black label

That striking 10 is awesome. Almost picked that.

I like the idea of a draft. We would use MSRP?

You get 1 box of real-world watches. Meaning no uber-bling, and probably no minute repeaters or tourby's. Let's make it 6 watches deep. One from each of the categories below.

1. Dress watch
2. Dive watch
3. Beater watch
4. Chrono watch
5. Pilot/Aero inspired
6. Guilty pleasure Watch

I'll start:

1. Dress watch - IWC Portofino Moonphase
2. Dive watch - Seiko Marine Master SBDX001
3. Beater watch – Seiko Orange Monster SKX781
4. Chrono – Zenith Chronomaster Open XXT
5. Pilot/Aero Inspired – Breitling Navitimer World
6. Guilty Pleasure - UBoat Classico 53mm
1. Dress Watch - Something like this:

2. Dive Watch -

3. Beater Watch - Seiko Orange or Black Monster is a great choice.
4. Chrono -

5. Pilot Watch - Probably something from Bremont

I'm interested in doing a "build a collection with 50k" thing too, but I'm gonna bite on the 6 categories, 2 fairly expensive picks here but all are <20k.

1. Dress watch - AP Jules Audemars Automatic

2. Dive watch - IWC Aquatimer

3. Beater watch - Full Tilt Poker Sports Watch (why spend real money on a beater? lol)

4. Chrono watch - AP Royal Oak Chronograph

5. Pilot/Aero inspired - IWC Mark XVI

6. Guilty pleasure Watch - Gucci 115 Pantheon

The watch snob in me will never let me get one because it's a fashion brand, but this watch is STUNNING in person.

OK..lets start the framework for this then..

Max budget? $50k?
How many watches?
Any mandatory choices/styles?
What price are we using? MSRP? Jomashop equivalent?

I think $50k and MSRP is good idea with no watch over $25000.

For styles lets just use the 6 here with the stipulation that beater shouldn't be over $500.

speaking of your favorite daytona, looks like Hublot is jumping on the bandwagon. I guess there is a big leopard print crowd out there

jester.. it's actually the daytona but to fit it into that list i just threw it in that category. i rarely wear anything besides the patek and daytona these days. i have plans to revamp but that's many years (and dollars) down the road..

amoeba, thanks..

Awesome collection pokerplease, love the Type XX.

Re: the 50k, I think it makes more sense to just make it clear that it's ALL the watches you can own. So make sure to serve all of your purposes. Frankly, if I had to spend 50k on a collection, I more than likely wouldn't buy a diver at all. And I definitely wouldn't own a Pilot styled watch. On the flipside, I'd definitely get a royal oak of some sort, and unless it's a chrono that wouldn't fit into the 6 at all.

Hmm yeah I see what you are saying. I think the Aviation inspired is too specific.

How about

1. Dress
2. Sport
3. Diver
4. Chrono
4. Beater
5. Guilty

Good points. Now looking at that list, does chrono & sport seem a bit redundant?

Using TimeZone forum groups as a guide, they break is down into the following.
-24 hour
-Affordable
-Chinese
-Digital
-Dive
-Fashion
-German
-High-end
-High-end quartz
-Independent
-Pilot & Military
-Russian
-Vintage & Pocket

I think it's just better to leave it up to you. I wear a suit to work; I need two dress watches (one to match black accessories, one to match brown). Many people don't need that, etc.
My own list would be based on different criteria altogether, although would still ensure little to no overlap. Something like:
1. Black-matching dress
2. Brown-matching dress
3. Steel on steel
4. PVD
5. Rubber band
Let's Talk Watches Quote
03-28-2011 , 04:54 PM
nah, I was actually thinking sport and diver might be more overlapping.

But basically I think of sport as anything semidressy and comes only with bracelet or looks most natural on bracelet that wouldn't fit in to any of the other categories. So stuff like the Royal Oak, VC overseas, Rolex explorer I/Milgauss.. They might have water resistance but they aren't designed for diving. They feel at home in a formal setting but at the same time aren't really dress watches.

Really don't want to do it by matching to clothes since you can always swap out straps/bands.

Only if you don't have a sense of style and wouldn't want gold watch/brown band and a steel watch (steel or black band) to match black =P.

The point I'm making is that the rules shouldn't be so specific, mine are different from yours. This may make the MOST sense:

1. 50k spending max based on MSRP.
2. No fewer than 4 watches.
3. Treat the list as if you can't ever own watch that is NOT on the list, so make sure to include something for all purposes that ever come up for you.
4. There must be a substantial difference between each piece.

I'm going to do mine based on my current collection. I would like to do the $50k wish list, but there are so many watches out there, I couldn't possible narrow it down, so I'll stick to what I can afford.

I've tried to build up my stable so that I have a watch for any occasion. I also don't like to mix brown and black watches/shoes/belt. For categories, I'm going with dress, sport, diver, flieger, and beater. Anyway, here goes...

Dress:

Brown: Longines Master Collection Chrono

Black: Movado Temo

Either: Oris SS Pointer Date

Sport/Going Out:

Black: Omega Planet Ocean XL

Brown/Either: Breitling Navitimer World

Diver:
Oris Small Seconds Diver (blue, so it works anytime I wear jeans)

Flieger:
Stowa Airman Date

Beater:
Boschett Cave Dweller II

Just for fun:
Fortis B42 Marinemaster 3 Time Zone (It has a bracelet too, but I think the white strap is interesting.)

(Hopefully you guys don't mind all the pics. I, for one, love looking at shots of watches, and I don't think anyone's on a 56k modem anymore, hehe.)

That's most of them. I have some cheaper ones also, but these are the main players. The categories definitely overlap, too. I have a gator strap for the PO to dress it up a bit, a few straps for the Navi World, and a few for the Stowa as well. So, what am I missing?
