One thing to note there, that piece looks like it will have difficulty accepting aftermarket straps. Finding OEM straps a few years from now may be problematic.

Many watches with steel bracelets can take aftermarket straps (as long as the bracelet isn't "integrated").
That's true but the non-honda brand has orange hands/detail instead of red... I much prefer the red/black contrast. It's a definite trade off.

Good point about the bracelets.

I just got this watch. Its a Tag Heuer Aquaracer Chronograph Automatic with a rubber strap. It's $3200 but i got a better deal on it, nearly half price so I couldn't pass it it up. It's heavy, big, thick face, which is what I prefer.

I bought an TAG automatic about 10 years ago, similar looking to the one above. It has served me well and I have never had it cleaned or maintained, although it did tend to lose time (maybe losing a minute in two months). The other week, it stopped, and no amount of shaking or winding would keep it going, although it made it move for a second or two. Then, two days later, after a little shaking, it started up again. It worked for a day and then stopped again. Then, yesterday, it started moving again and is keeping time again.

I went to Sears Watch Repair for an estimate on cleaning/maintenance and they quoted $250, and suggested the authorized Tag repair facility might be $400 or $500. The watch itself only cost me $1100 or so 10 years ago. Is it worth cleaning/repairing? How long will its life be prolonged? I still like the design, but $250 seems like a lot to maintain a $1100 watch, especially if it is required frequently. Maybe I'm better off writing this one off and buying something new. Advice from the watch aficionados please... Thanks.

that's just the cost of ownership. $250 is pretty low. high end brands cost a lot more just for a service. if you're going to be wearing the watch again it's worth getting it repaired. it should be as good as new once it's repaired.

you should be getting it serviced ~3 years so that kind of stuff doesn't happen. I would definitely go to a TAG dealer though, not Sears lol.

I disagree with both of these. For normal usage 3 years is like getting your oil changed every 1500 miles. Sure, people who change oil for a living will tell you to get it changed more often LDO.

Also, TAG dealers are not going to have some sort of monopoly on knowledgeable watchmakers. Assuming the piece is not under warranty, feel free to take it to any well-recommended watchmaker.

yea it's not like tag have some complicated in-house movement. any competent watchmaker will do, could probably be less than $250. a complete service should last you 5-7 years.

I'm just going by what TAG recommends. Also, I feel more comfortable taking my watch somewhere with experience with the specific watch. Call me naive, I guess.

edit: I understand both of your points though.

That's awesome man. I wouldn't hold out for a SS duometre.

Even if one does come out you can always sell your totally sweet watch and put it towards it.

Or get both.

Love that sig, nice.

Lots more "modern" and aggressive looking pieces coming from JLC past year or two, they seemed to hold onto the classic look longer than most. Even if that's something I loved about them, good to see them mixing it up.

Five star choice. Exceedingly nice. The aesthetic design of that watch is just unreal good.

Dibbs- a lot of the aesthetics incorporated into that watch are reaching back. They 'look new' because they haven't been seen in a while but were pretty standard during different eras.

Anyone know of a online store where I can buy a new strap for my Breitling Chronomat Evolution?

Would like to have a brown crocodile-leather one...

Automatic watch noob question:

Twice now I've had my new Hamilton Khaki auto stop in the middle of the night after wearing it all day.

Is this normal? Do I need to give it a few winds before throwing it on my night stand?

Seems unusual. Wear it nonstop for a few days and then see.

Guys, I have $250 to spend at Tourneau, what the hell do I use it for? The strap from IWC is a totall ripoff at that price so I don't really know what to use it for. They can't source me used watches right?

I've been wearing it all day already. I obviously don't sleep with it on.

Guess I'll have to have it looked at.

Are you very sedentary? Perhaps you're just not generating enough arm movement to fully wind it. Wind it up by hand and then see what happens. You may be moving enough to keep it topped off but not enough to really get it fully wound from zero.

give it 15-20 winds before you go to bed. it should be fine for awhile. you can't over wind an automatic.
