Not the kid's fault...

i realize that, it was intertwined with why i sometimes feel embarrassed wearing a panerai (bc the owner of one may deem it appropriate to have his 10yo son wearing an oversized overpriced watch in case that wasn't clear).

First I would decide on whether you must have the chronograph function (stop watch) or whether you are just considering it for the looks.

If you don't need the chronograph function, you can actually get some mechanical watches with swiss ETA movements around the price range you are looking for.

If you must have the chronograph function, you will have to go either quartz (battery operated) or go with a Chinese Mechanical.

In terms of glass, the grade typically goes sapphire crystal with AR coating at the top, then plain sapphire crystal, then mineral crystal.

If you want a mechanical chronograph, I would probably save up a bit and get something like this

http://www.steinhartwatches.de/index...&Sel_ID=27#159

it has a valjoux 7750 which is used in lots of watches many times more expensive such as the Hublot Big Bang for example.
thanks for the help, i really like http://www.steinhartwatches.de/index...&Sel_ID=27#159 this. probably gonna look around for similar watches/prices for this watch.

cxbxax,

What size are your wrists? I wonder if that is what it would look like on me? I am probably 7.25-7.5 depending on how tight or loose I want it.

Define girly wrists. Not a fan of TAG's at all. Too much celebrity endorsement. In this price range you can get a Omega Seamaster (2254, 2255, Bond, Aqua Terra) if diving watches are your style. This watch has too much silver/blingy feel to it for me. I could possibly see it though with a leather/nato/rubber strap.

Re: Panerai watches.

I wonder what % of those douches have fakes.

My wrists are 7 inch, i do like the omega's though, also like the Rolex sports ranges, i just think the faces may be a little big for me. I thought this tag was quite discreat to be honest.

7 inch wrist aren't girly at all. I think a 41-42mm watch would fit fine on a 7 inch wrist.

It really comes down to your own choice though. I just have this thing with TAG's since there are many quartz models out there (same with Omega, but I let it slide because of the Speedmaster Pro haha).

Don't buy a watch for others . If you like it, buy it! As long as it will make you happy.

or

for $885

I like the look of these, But is it too much? They look expensive as **** and when people ask "Is it real?" You can honestly say yes without having to pay an arm & a leg. Are these a bit gaudy or can it be pulled off?

Second hand is not a second but a chrono...

But it's not like anyone would ever take that on a sailboat or race track...

Hideous imo.

10/10. I raged.

I have a question to people who own very expensive watches. Do you ever feel uncomfortable with displaying that level of wealth? I would feel very self conscious and almost defensive while wearing something like that, but it's not just watches, the thought of driving an aston martin also makes me nervous.

What's wrong with me?

Watches are generally pretty discreet. Cars, not so much.

I don't consider anything below 7k to be too expensive as far as watches go so I can't really comment on whether or not I feel uncomfortable. It's all relative I guess. If you are purchasing a watch well within your means it wouldn't be different from purchasing a $400 pair of shoes or something like that, or like you said driving a 100k car. I do think I have a watch collection that many men in their 30's wish they would have though, and that is hardly saying anything (says more about how busto people are IRL). Again its all relative. Most guys in their 30's may have many obligations so a 3k watch would be low on the priority list behind paying for the mortgage/car/family needs etc...It's all about disposable income which many poker players have quite a bit of. But as far as your average Joe out there, the only brands they'd probably recognize are Rolex (POS) and TAG (even then, they would actually have to see the name on the watch to know it was a Rolex). They would have no idea that your Vacheron Constantin cost as much as their yearly salary or their 3 Series.

But to answer your question, nothing is wrong with you obviously. I would feel a bit uncomfortable if I was wearing a $500k VC, PP, ALS, AP, RM, UN etc around college campus.

The average person out there has no idea what a luxury watch really costs.

Thanks. I guess I would get used to it, it would be a little weird hanging out with some childhood friends who slipped through the gaps though.

I wasn't talking about those limited edition artworks, some like the VC overseas dual-time...

Yeah, they are expensive for sure but it's nothing to hide. I am saving up for a VC Overseas Chronograph actually, haha good tastes you have. Like NU Star said, they are quite discreet compared to many other things that show wealth. To be honest I don't even think it would come up unless someone liked the "look" of the watch.

I agree with solsek. 95% of people (at least) will have no clue clue what a watch costs, unless it's a Rolex. Most of the population thinks an expensive watch is anything over $200 or so. I wouldn't worry about it. Although, I still won't wear my expensive pieces around my parents, because I don't want to explain why I spent 3k+ on a watch, hehe.

Reminds me of a story in a Watchuseek thread. The guy was complimented on his Omega, and the person asked how much it cost. He responded, "About four." The other person was like "400 dollars?! That's crazy! Why would you pay that much for a watch?"
