Usually think straps on ROOs looks like crap/totally forced and misplaced for the piece but like that one a lot, the brown kind of adds the academic/adventurous/Indiana Jones more home grown feel to it, if that makes any sense, probably a terrible description though.

That's a bad ass watch but doesn't look like an every day watch you can sport with whatever you want to wear. I like it though.

Okay, I'm stilling shopping around for a new watch and have come across some nice looking vintage pieces. It's probably not a good idea for me to buy an old watch as I know nothing about watches, but it seems I can get something quite nice for my budget.

Here's a few I'm liking atm. I love the look of the rolex, but wearing one sems a little ostentatious. I think I'm leaning towards the black dialed Omega, but I'm not sure as the seller seems to have several of these. Which are your favorites from below? Also all state that the dials have been repainted. Is this a bad thing.. i.e/ does it devalue them at all?

I would ask for the appraisal value before you buy anything.

Really not feeling the coloured dials on any of them, makes them look tacky imo.

All from ebay... Is there a site that shows what ~values of old watches are?

Yeah I hear ya. All the black/white dials nowadays are a tad boring though... I'm sure colour will become fashionable again soon But saying that the black Omega is still prob my favorite

Is it because of budget purposes that you are considering the more vintage pieces or do you just like them more? I think it's a pretty risky investment buying a vintage watch off ebay unless you know A LOT about watches.

I like the orange Favre-Leuba

Yeah mostly it's because of budget, but also just shopping around to see what I can get. It just seems all the new watches I like are way out of my price range (~$500), and the ones within my budget just seem a bit ordinary and plain.

You're probably right about it being quite risky though, especially as the main reason I'm buying a watch is to keep accurate time :P

You want an accurate watch get a Casio.

I like colored faces but a modern paint job on a vintage watch doesn't work for me.

UTS 3000m, I like.

Seiko has some nice watches if you are looking for a watch with accurate timing + under $500. With that said I would probably never wear a Seiko though.

Look at Hamilton/Oris. If you could stretch your budget by $200 or $300 you could get a good quality, brand new automatic watch.

Digging this Automatic Hamilton for $359 brand new at Jomashop.

http://www.jomashop.com/hamilton-men...h70455733.html

There are plenty of variations of this kind (white dial etc etc there that you should check out).

Also, since you are purchasing for "accuracy" automatic watches are no-where near as accuracy as a $10 quartz watch. The error is usually +/- a few seconds a day but having an automatic watch >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> quartz watch.

What strap is that? I have a 500m on the UTS rubber and would like to diversify to a leather strap but I know some may be tricky as the lugs are tight on the watch. Thanks

Don't know, found the pic on the net.

But it's a 22mm lug width. Order one.
Also, tell us about the UTS.

Yeah ordering one is not an issue, issue is around the tightness of the lugs on the UTS.. I've been told some standard leather may be difficult to get on.

I like the UTS a lot.. kick around tool-ish type watch. I bought this one used and had it re-blasted. Their new versions of this watch, 1000m and other models are really nice. The lug structure is unique, so you need to like that, but overall, it's one of my weekend'ers that I think look damn cool.

Thanks for the ideas guys, much appreciated. I do like the look of both the Hamilton and UTS watches. I'll def be looking into them.

Oh and by accurate, I just meant that I didn't want to have to set the time every day. +/- a couple secs a day is fine. Doing some research it seemed some of those older watches I saw could lose 2 minutes a day, which is pretty useless... Back on the watch hunt

you can also consider Debaufre/Steinhart who both use swiss movements.

While some of their pieces are homage pieces, they have quite a few original pieces too.

I've owned a couple Steinhart watches, pure quality. Very nice and great price point.

LOL... I just logged onto ebay and noticed there was 8 minutes left and only £12 bid on this watch I showed before. I thought that seemed cheap and decided to bid on it, even though it was'nt one of my favorites. I ended up getting it for £18 inc postage. Not bad I think Anyone one now how much they're worth?

A couple of great looking affordable watches there. I'm definitely looking to buy one of them for my 'real' watch purchase. Thanks for the suggestions.
