Yeah, thermocompensated movements are quite unusual, even in expensive watches. Basicaly, quartz watches will run at different rates at different temperatures, but the change is fairly predictable. So if you know the temperature, you can adjust the number of vibrations from the quartz crystal you expect for one second.
I have a non-thermocompensated seiko with the 8F56 movement, it's rated at +/- 20 seconds per year, which is pretty much the best non-thermocompensated movement available. BUT, that rating is only good if you wear the watch 12 hours or more per day. Obviously it's calibrated to something close to human body temperature.
Thermocompensated movements will usually be in the +/- 10 seconds/year range. The Citizen A660 (found in the Chronomaster) and the Seiko 9F62 are better than +/- 5 seconds/year.
