Karak,

Your school classification efforts don't fit 2+2 norms.

1. HYS
2. T-14
3. TTT

If your "unranked newer school" is UCI, my advice is to avoid it like the plague.

BigLaw is no longer the safe bet it once was:

Those are pretty nasty numbers, and rescinding 3L offers just plain sucks.

Yep, freakin midterms.

Contracts II on the 25th and Con Law on the 26th. Unlike the others which are just a final.

LOL.

I suppose schools vary then.

We have 2 semesters of Civ Pro and 2 of Contracts.

i've heard from a couple places that it can be virtually impossible to get hired at a "biglaw" firm in a big-city market if you don't go to a top-10 type school. can anyone (ideally someone who's been through law school already) comment on the truth of this. (it's sorta been touched on in this thread already but not too thoroughly)

example: a fordham grad trying to get an NYC biglaw job, going up against NYU and columbia grads. how boned is he? really boned, or only kinda?

of course, if this question is too stupid and vague, feel free to let me know that too.

1. if you are going for a nyc biglaw job, you're not just competing against NYU and columbia, you're competing against everyone (although obviously lots more jobs in nyc than elsewhere)

2. Nobody, not even a biglaw hiring partner, is a position right now to answer this question for 3+ years from now. My firm had around 150 summers across offices in '08. This year they're going to have about 50 (or so I've heard). Who do you think got pushed out? The Harvard/Yale kids or the Fordham/BU/GW kids?

So while top 25% at that second group of schools used to be a pretty solid bet for biglaw, probably a lot worse odds this year. Will next year be better? Highly doubtful. Will two years? Probably not. Will recruiting be back up to pre-2008 levels in 3-4 years or will there be some fundamental shift in the way big firms do business? who knows?

Anyone know much about Temple? I was recently accepted there, and I will get state tuition (less than 20k/yr), so it has emerged as one of my top choices. Just barely out of the T1... apparently places very well in philly and PA.

I went to Rutgers and worked at a top NYC Biglaw firm. I graduated in the top ten students in my class and had offers from a ton of BigLaw firms. The Weil partner at my on campus interview just spent the 20 minutes trying to convince me to work for his firm. Obv things have changed, since I graduated in 2006, but if you did well in school you should do fine. Not trying to say it's easy or brag about it, but just want to emphasize tat it is very possible.

Ummmm. Congrats and all, but I'm not sure top ten students (which seems like its top 7-8% or so from quick googling of rutger class size) qualifies as "doing well" and making it "very possible."

Now take into account the downturn in the economy and how many Rutgers students w/o "diversity" or connections are getting biglaw jobs this year? 10? 5? 3?

My friend at a top 15-20 school had 13 people from his school at his firm this past summer. They cut their summer class in half for 2009. So you'd expect it to go down to 6/7, right? Try 0. From 13 to 0 in a single year. Not surprisingly, Yale, Harvard, etc. are still well represented at near traditional levels.

The cuts are disproportionately killing people from mid-level schools.

just bust your ass, get some things on your resume that will help you get a good clerkship, and ride then you won't have to worry about getting a firm job til 4+ yrs from now. (obviously clerkships have gotten more competitive as well)
