that is one badly edited video...it's too long and it breaks up the song too many times. If they cut out all the non-song stuff, the song and video would be pretty cool

Don't ask me what it has to do with Kanye. I am not the one that brought up the producing.

I really doubt how large Kanye would be without his controversial antics. Most everyone I knew never heard of Kanye until his anti-Bush speech.

His truth is valuable.

I was only going on about how I don't think that kanye is a well-devoloped artist, and is lacking basic fundamentals in musical understanding. That is not a subjective opinion. The objective perspective is clear if you think along 3 basic lines.

Good singing (subjective as all hell.)
Keeping time (you mean he doesn't constrain himself to your time)Keeping in key. (again, your definition of pitch)

He fails on 2 out of 3. Not saying much because any jackass can hold a rhythm.

You fail on 3 of 3.

I am also very liberal on my seemingly narrow definition of music.

Nope.

I only ask for the bare minimum (the 3 items listed), where many other musicians hold much much higher standards.

nope.

To see how controversial "good" and "bad" music is defined, listen to two serious musicians go at it for a while. There is also no doubt that it is nearly impossible to be completely objective. In attempting to be objective, I am attempting to influence my own subjective thinking. However, keep in mind that my idea of objective thinking may be different than what another may think. For example, I have heard very good musicians call Eric Clapton a genius, and others call him too simplistic.

So he must be a genius.

Some people may call Jimmy Page too sloppy, while others may call him a revolutionary. As long as both sides of the argument are well thought out, I am in no position to dispute either claim.

So don't.

Please note that I did not call this thread "Lady Gaga appreciation." My interest really started with seeing her on the Grammy's. Up until that point I didn't know much about her, so I figured a person of her performance level should deserve a second look. Analyzing the parts of the whole helps me determine how much or how little I should appreciate her art.

The general thinking seems to be that I am simply trying to eddify her work, but that is not the case at all. Just because I may like an artist at first, doesn't mean that I will when I start to dig into the make up of the work I am seeking to understand.

Are we clear?

Are you?

Basically, if you are going to go ahead and take this thread as some clitoris sucking, then you are failing to see the point of it.

?

Note that I bashed into a song that the previaling opinion on this thread is one of her better songs. If you are going to come in here and insult her on the basis that she is a gimmick and she sucks simply because you don't like her style of music, then come in here and compare her to other musicains, then you ought to be able to back up your claims beyond saying "they suck."

Preach on.

i dunno, IMDb only exists because some massive movie buffs decided to create it. it's not like the studios created it.

Actually, you have pretty 'high' standards of what music is. Watch some interviews of John Cage or other modern classical performers and see how they define 'music'. Better yet, see what they consider 'music' and what they compose. And then you have to start defining 'compose'. I think that what Kanye does as a producer, as a rapper, qualifies as music. What the RZA did on 36 Chambers is music too. They are musicians plain and simple. It may not fit within your definition of music, but I think you are being incredibly myopic then. I could be wrong, I pretty much grunched the Kanye discussion, but yeah. Check out Merzbow or Jandek. Is the former just noise but the latter music? Do you have to be in a key discernible key or can you just make sounds?

As for Lady Gaga, I think she's awesome. She makes really really good Europop/Modern Disco (Italo disco?) with a bit more of an edge and self-aware artistry. I think she can be appreciated as pure pop music but that that's just one dimension of her art. I think that knowing her influences, the musical (punk, cabaret, disco) and artistic history (Warhol, Situationist, Performance Artists and fashion designers) from where she came, and all that, really adds depth to her. And I think that anyone who says she makes dumb music is completely missing the point and probably hates 'pop' music anyway and really shouldn't be passing judgment on a genre that they are biased against.

You guys may also enjoy Roisin Murphy, who has a similar schtick, wearing outrageous outfits and making "simple" pop music with a self-aware showmanship. I think Gaga has pulled it off even better, but not by much.

what sets her apart from current pop acts is her ability to perform in different environments and audiences. while the core of her fan base primarily gobbles up her radio edited pop songs, the diversity and range of her performances allow her to appeal to a much wider fan base than other pop artists. she does not pigeon hole herself into being someone that simply sings pop music, instead, she attempts to elevate them through her performances. a person does not necessarily have to like her pop music to like Lady Gaga. they can just enjoy her acoustic piano performances. basically, the different facets of Lady Gaga make it more palatable to like her as a singer / performer.

some examples would be raunchy Gaga at Glastonbury 2009 interacting with the crowd and playing up the sex

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfGpOSyvi7o

and then on the other side, you have a more laid back Gaga singing and speaking French to a French audience

also, if you're bored, here's an interesting read on Lady Gaga and connections with the occult / Illumaniti. http://vigilantcitizen.com/?p=2737 don't believe it but still an interesting read nonetheless

She's terrific. I'd love to see her tour with Queen, or do a covers tour, because not only can she write decent songs, she can knock other people's songs out of the park.

I'd love to hear her do a cover of 'Could It Be Magic'.

You do realize music does not necessarily have to have profound lyrics to be enjoyable, or even great, right? So using the same argument, I assume you think "She Loves You" by The Beatles is equally vapid.

Interesting logic you have there.
