Billy Graham died, 99. Very significant cultural/historical figure thru the 50s-70s, I'd say. Evangelizing before evangelism became cool! I remember my dad used to jokingly refer to him as Nixon's Minister of Religion because they were good pals.

If it wasn’t for the Evangelical Movement, our country would be 50 years beyond what it is now. Ignorance should never be applauded.

Instead of RIP Billy Graham, I'm saying BIH.

I'm not a fan, but he didn't seem nearly as bad as the guys who followed him. Jim Bakker, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, etc.

I have to disagree a little, Billy Graham really wasn't the type of ministry to tell you what to think and what to do, he was more the type to convince you what to do based on the teaching of Christianity.

There is a difference.

Someone telling me what I should do under fear of damnation from God is different than telling me what the teaching of the Bible says and it's always up to me what I can do.

Graham never made political agenda, he ministered to all people who wanted to listen, he was criticized for not being more political but his idea to affect change was to get people to change their minds through their hearts.

Which is not a totally bad idea.

I'd rather have a preacher trying to convert people to Christianity to do good than trying to tell me how to live my life, and if I don't do what they say, I'm going to Hell.

Billy Graham was not a bad person; just a little demented and twisted and ignorant and lost and he thought he had found a solution to those chimeras and wanted to pass it on to the masses. That he and Nixon were very close buddies is very telling. I liked them both, but I put Nixon higher up on my like list than old Billy.

Churches have so beautiful a tax exemption that we'll probably never know how well Billy did when it came to making money and saving souls. He'd probably make a beautiful case study for an MBA program if someone could get their hands on his books.

Nanette Fabray died, 97. I always liked her, sharp and witty, easy on the eyes as the older ladies go too imo. She'd flirt with Johnny Carson and hold her own.

Graham was the king of having a political agenda among religious leaders. He tried to work his way in with Eisenhower, but after one meeting Ike (a very religious person) barred him from the white house. He was one of Nixon's closest advisors, not just a buddy. And he was an advisor to many later prominent political figures.

Well, it was Truman who sent him away, saying he "just wanted his name in the paper" and he didn't have a political agenda, according to biographies, which is why he was criticized many times, especially during the Civil Rights movement.

''They're the ones putting out the pornographic stuff,'' Graham said to Nixon - "the Jewish stranglehold has got to be broken or the country's going down the drain,'' he continued.
Graham also confided in Nixon that he hid his true feelings about Jews from them: ''I go and I keep friends with Mr. Rosenthal (then exective editor) at The New York Times and people of that sort, you know. And all -- I mean, not all the Jews, but a lot of the Jews are great friends of mine, they swarm around me and are friendly to me because they know that I'm friendly with Israel. But they don't know how I really feel about what they are doing to this country. And I have no power, no way to handle them, but I would stand up if under proper circumstances.''

Graham, who had a long history of supporting Israel, apologized profusely after the tapes' release and said he had no recollection of the conversation.

"If it wasn't on tape, I would not have believed it," Graham told Newsweek. "I guess I was trying to please. I felt so badly about myself - I couldn't believe it. I went to a meeting with Jewish leaders and I told them I would crawl to them to ask their forgiveness."
