He had four wives, not all at the same time I gather. Which is wise. He had lots of children, which is ok. He had enormous riches and influence which is fine if that sort of power makes you happy. Gambling is what life is about, so he lived well. And now the maggots will eat his brain. It is what we can all expect. RIP.

Herbert Stempel, the whistleblower from the 1950s quiz show scandals, died April 7th (although apparently first reported today) at the age of 93. For those not old enough to remember the scandal first-hand, he was portrayed by John Turturro in Quiz Show, the very good 1990s movie about the scandal.

Wes Unseld, 74, HOF NBA player who was instrumental in Washington's only NBA championship. In fact, he's probably the most revered player in franchise history. (And MJ doesn't count/qualify.)

He was a weird type of player I remember, way short for a center and stocky/beefy instead of slender. And he always had a weird hair thing going too. Great leader, tough guy, incredibly hard worker at the rebounds. There was only one Wes Unseld. But the Bullets didn't get the title til they added Elvin Hayes, who was the complete opposite to Unseld in a lot of ways but could ofc play a little himself.

I don't think we'll see another like Unseld. When centers were allowed to park themselves in the paint, there were more big and stocky guys who could box out and rebound. Maybe Laimbeer was the similar when he was at Detroit. Laimbeer could never grow the do, unfortunately.

George Lucas called him “one of the founding pillars” of the Star Wars franchise. Harrison Ford? Mark Hamill? No, that would be Charles Lippincott, who promoted the original film long before its release in 1977. He has died at 80.

I don't know if Mr. Lippincott is considered famous enough to be in this thread, but I found the NY Times obituary of him to be a pretty interesting read, and thought others here (particularly Star Wars fans) would find it of interest as well.

I thought the same thing, but that would be ridiculous.

Can someone explain what is wrong with Uncle Ben and Mrs. Butterworth?

probably this for Uncle Ben's (similar to Aunt Jemima)

Many African Americans object to the term "Uncle" (or "Aunt") when used in this context, as it was a southern form of address first used with older enslaved peoples, since they were denied use of courtesy titles.
. guessing Mrs. Butterworth read the writing on the wall, especially with their history of the shape of the bottle.
i don't know about you but ever since i was a kid i interpreted Mrs. BW as being a slave woman who made great pancakes for white folk.

Having used Log Cabin my entire life, it escaped me that Mrs. Butterworth was supposed to be Black, but looking at the bottle on the innerweb, I'm pretty sure that's what she was intended to be.

Try to use pure maple if you have the chance.

if you haven't tried pure maple, it's worth the price. it's what all the other corn based syrups are trying to be.

Pure maple syrup is the way to go; everything else is just too sickly sweet. Log cabin is what we had growing up, not bad but my initial comment stands. And Aunt and Uncle mean just that, nothing more, to me. Unless reading P.G Whodehouse;in which case Aunt takes on whole new meanings, from sinister to extraordinary and shenanigans are sure in the offing.
