I liked Odd Thomas.

There's apparently an issue with the gear shifters in that SUV and its under recall.

"The SUV that rolled down a driveway and killed "Star Trek" actor Anton Yelchin was being recalled because the gear shifters have confused drivers, causing the vehicles to roll away unexpectedly, government records show...

The 2015 model-year Grand Cherokees were part of a global recall of 1.1 million vehicles announced by Fiat Chrysler in April, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration records show.

The agency urged the recall because of complaints from drivers who had trouble telling if they had put the automatic transmissions in park. If they were not in park and a driver left the vehicle, it could roll away."

Bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley died. You might have heard of his songs O Death and Man of Constant sorrow. He got his start singing with his brother Carter, who drank himself to death at an early age. Check out the picking and the harmonies. This is the real thing.

My Uncle Snort, he's sawed off and short. He measures 4 feet 2.
But he feels like a giant when you give pint of that good old mountain dew.

Had a chance to see Ralph Stanley sing a few songs a few years ago in Virginia. Sad to lose an irreplaceable piece of authentic American culture.

Buddy Ryan died, defensive coordinator for the legendary 85 Bears and more responsible for their success than Mike Ditka, most likely. Pretty fair head coach himself later, obviously the father of NFL coaches Rex and Rob Ryan as well. Old Buddy was one of a kind, to put it mildly.

RIP Pat Summitt, legendary former coach of the University of Tennessee's women's basketball team. Dead at 64.

She won 8 national championships, and at the time of her retirement, had won more NCAA games than any college basketball coach in history.

Fantastic and innovative player. Deserves his own thread for what he did for music.

By design, and due to the nature of this thread, we always posthumously celebrate the performances and/or careers of actors and actresses and wish them rest in peace. I'd like to deviate from that practice today and celebrate the 100th birthday of one of the last remaining Hollywood stars from its glory days of the 1930s and 1940s. Nominated for five Academy Awards and winner of two: Olivia de Havilland.

BTW, in celebration of her centennial, many of her movies are being shown by TCM every Friday night in July. Tonight's movies include GWTW (of course), The Adventures of Robyn Hood, Captain Blood, The Private Lives of Elizabeth & Essex, and Raffles.

As soon as she dies, I'll say something good about her. That's how it works.

I wasn't asking others to comment; I stated that I was deviating from the SOP of this thread so that I could acknowledge her 100th birthday.

Another obit for Wiesel. News companies can't write enough about him, IMO.

FWIW, I have zero knowledge of poetry, but Mr Hill seems highly regarded, and this is The Lounge.

Noel Neill who played Lois Lane to George Reeves Superman, died July 3, 2016, in Tucson, AZ, age 95. This Superman series ended in 1958, so you have to have a few years to remember this as original broadcasts. At the time, it was huge; TV was in its infancy and Superman was one of the dominate shows for kids.

Lou Fontinato, NHL hit man, died July 3, 2016, in Guelph, Ontario, Canada, age 84. A search of Youtube will find video of the career-ending check that left him paralyzed for about a month. I haven't found video of his fight with Gordie Howe.
