Charlotte Rae died, Mrs. Garrett from Facts of Life. What an awful sitcom that was. She was ok in it though, had a bubbly vivacious quality.

NPR reported this directly after leading with the Indonesian earthquake. Unfortunately, to announce Rae’s death, they smash cut to the chippper Fact of Life theme: “You take the good/you take the bad/you take them both and/there you have the /facts of life, the facts of life...” right after grimly announcing how many presumed dead.

yes Robuchon had a lot of restaurants (around two dozen), but a cumulative total of 35 Michelin stars is quite an accomplishment and speaks a lot about his desire for perfection.

Shinobu Hashimoto died 18 July. Screenwriter for Kurosawa and others. Worked on Rashomon, Ikiru, Seven Samurai etc. etc. etc. -- a ton of great movies.

Paul Laxalt died, Republican senator from Nevada. He had strong ties to Ronald Reagan somehow, I forget the particulars. The main thing I remember about him was that everything he said was comically bland, like a parody of a boring politician. Also he looked like a soap opera actor or tv anchor. RIP
