Ermey was a technical consultant. The way I heard it, he stepped in to play the DI during rehearsals while the part was being cast. Kubrick, genius that he was, knew his DI had been right under his nose the whole time.

Just came across this 3-minute video where he talks about how he manipulated his way into stealing the role from another actor who had already been hired. (And I mean that in a good way, lol.)
