RIP Gene Hackman

He was great and iconic. Another of the truly great actors gone.

Nice piece by Sean Fennessey at The Ringer talking about essential Hackman movies. I'm embarrassed by how many I haven't seen, but thankful I can enjoy them down the road.

Boris Spassky died, age 88, former world chess champion. Foe of Fischer and then friend. Not the hardest worker at his craft it is said, but evidently a pretty good guy as Soviet Commies went. Something of a womanizer, cultured, man of the world. Amazingly thick hair.

For those of you who weren't around back then the Fischer/Spassky match was HUGE.

The entire human condition is here. It's almost like a marriage where it's one person's job to do everything wrong and it's the other person's job to deal with it. It's magnificent. This scene is as good as anything I've ever seen in the movie.

what happens if you reverse engineer from 'we're not animals, are we ronnie' and are kind when you unwind time backward

Get Shorty is one of the few movies ever made that is literally perfect.

This is the truth as I know it, and I think it somehow explains why I find it so hard to grasp.

David Johansen at 75. I was lucky enough to see him in every iteration: Buster Poindexter, himself, and the New York Dolls.

Nice! I love their original albums (their first is one of my favorite of all time), and I've enjoyed live recordings of them from the 70s, but I thought the reunion live album was terrible, even though it had the original songs.

so new details about Gene Hackman and his wife:

Apparently, his wife died of hanta virus in the home....Hackman, who the wife was caring for, had dementia and probably did not know what to do or how to get help. They think he fell, too, and finally died where he fell...probably of dehydration.

Awful.

Just learned that the sports writer John Feinstein died, only 69. He was very good at what he did, made his name with the Bobby Knight book Season on the Brink, mid 80s I think. Kept the books coming, not all winners but some very good ones in there. Good on tv too.

Slick Watts died, legendary Seattle Supersonic from the 70s. Little bald guy, cool cat. Bald wasn't even cool back then, hard to imagine I know. Slick did his own thing and looked great in green. Very good player too, could spark rallies out of nothing.
