I'm just now realizing how little I know about Joplin. I think she's in the 27 club, and for some reason I have a mental association of Studio 54, not that I really know what that is.

The take a little piece of my heart song, I would have said that was a male vocalist.

As far as I know, for today, no one important died; certainty no one I would care to remember. I hope this tread continues. On the other hand, someone who will be important in the future was born today - we don't know the particular individual yet but the probability is so staggering that only the mathematically challenged or the totally deranged would disagree. But that is about 95% of the population.

Early indications are she's kind of useless tho. Crying all the time, leeching off others, won't even hold up her own head. I'm not optimistic.

I'll tell you who I hope dies next, Pope Francis. Can't ****ing stand that jerk. Who does he even think he is, with all these grandiose lefto proclamations of his. Even Catholics barely care what he thinks. Stick a sock in it already, Frankie.

This is sad news. I was managing a bar in the 80's with a taped sound system, and whenever I played the Vanity 6 album, a near riot would break out. It was, as they now say, polarizing.

RIP

I guess I should google Joseph Heller but it seems more fun if I don't know who that is.

You could go through life unfamiliar with the greatest English language satirical novel, or you could check out Catch-22 from the local library. Your call.

You could find a copy of Catch 22, but you would have to know who Joseph Heller is first.

+1

Probably my favorite book. It may be the only novel where I've ever really lol'ed, like more than just a smile or chuckle.

Definitely my favorite. I never reread books and I have read this one 5 times. I can still remember both reading it the first time and where I was when I was reading it. I can't really remember that about any other book.

It's excellent satire for those who have never served in the military. For those who have, it is Literary Realism. Win/Win.

I read Catch-22 in the Navy and got several buddies who basically never read to do so as well. Probably ruined them for life, as they would never find another book that lived up to that one.

I have a vivid memory, from almost 50 years ago, of standing inside the wire at sunset in one of those absurd hurry-up-and-wait moments, when a lifer came along and said something remarkably stupid.

I had assumed the guys I was with didn't know how to read, when all of a sudden, 3 or 4 of them started quoting from catch-22.

"They're trying to kill me!"

"Not me, bro, I'm gonna live forever, or die in the attempt."

Sergeant pipes up, "What's really funny is, back in the States they still think Catch-22 is fiction," and we all crack up.

Goodbye to All That, fits the realism quite well. The satire is just being truthful. I think Robert Graves is long ago dead. But I could be wrong. He lived in Spain for awhile. I wonder where he is buried? Someone Google it and let us all know.
