Joaquin Andujar died the other day, good pitcher for those 80s Cardinal teams that won a lot. He was a total head case but a pretty nice guy by all indications. He used to refer to himself as "one crazy Dominican."

People will talk endlessly about Russell, Chamberlain, Jabbar, even Olajuwon way before they'll even mention Malone's name. I suspect a lot of it has to do with Malone's private nature, that he rarely opened up to the media.

Malone was a scorer too, unlike Russell. He averaged 25 pts. and 14 rebounds every year for 8 straight years, as that article mentions.

Moses is criminally underrated. Guy was a beast. A 3 time MVP. He mentored 2 of the best in Charles and Hakeem.

I guess it's just perspective. Malone played at a time when I closely followed the NBA, so I think of him as a great, as do all the people I hang with. Plus I don't spend a lot of time watching ESPN, so I don't know what the current generation of pundits think of him. It just seemed amazing to me that someone could regard him as less.

But then again, I got to see Chamberlin play a few times as a kid, and all I remember are his hilarious -- and usually futile -- attempts to make free throws.

And speaking of deaths and Lew Alcindor and other NBA greats: RIP the hook shot. I haven't seen one in the NBA for a long while. The beauty of a great smooth hook shot in front of the basket is hard to beat. That it has died on the vine is a huge loss to the NBA. Game changed I know. Didn't old Kareem have his 'skyhook'. Last year I was watching a game and some show boy did a classic hook shot and I thought, bring that back to the game.

I've always wondered about that. Any 7 footer that develops one would go from good or average to great. I know its not an easy shot to perfect but it seems worth the effort.
