Colin Powell is dead at 89 from covid complications.

Anyways, I stay away from political discourse in general. He served in Viet Nam, progressed through the ranks, and ended up working on the dubya.

Sounds like he had a pretty incredible life.

Halyna Hutchins, 42, cinematographer

Hutchins was killed today on the set of "Rust," a western produced by and starring Alec Baldwin, when Baldwin's prop gun misfired during a rehearsal and struck Hutchins in the stomach.

Director Joel Souza was also struck and is in serious condition.

***

How does this happen? How can a prop gun - even one with blanks - hit TWO different people? How close were they to the gun? This can't be a "wadding" thing, like with Jon Erik Huxum, or like with Brandon Lee.

Baldwin fired twice while rehearsing with Souza and Hutchins...is it possible the gun had live ammunition in it?? That would be criminal.

There has been many crime shows that have had this scenario, maybe as far back as Colombo. Let the investigation begin.

It had a live round in the gun.

If the gun was given to him by the prop master, Baldwin would assume it was safe.

Why would they need a live round on the set?

The Brandon Lee incident wasn’t a full live round but enough (with a terrible chain of events) to kill him:

“In the case of Brandon Lee, a real revolver was used. According to various reports, here’s what happened… The camera shot required that a revolver look loaded. This meant the camera had to see bullets in the cylinder. The special effects crew removed the gun powder from the rounds, replaced the bullets, but failed to remove the primer that explodes to ignite the gun powder.

This gun was fired, and the small explosion of the primer was enough to push one of the bullets into the barrel. No one noticed it there. In the next scene, this same gun was loaded with blanks. These are rounds with gun powder but no bullets that, when fired, create the noise, flash, and kickback of a real gunshot. The blank was fired at Brandon; the bullet that had been jammed in the barrel came out with enough force to lodge in his abdomen and kill him.”

Since Lee’s death there are new rules regarding firearm handling on film sets. It’s safe to assume that at least one of these rules was bypassed.

I'm reading that some of the crew walked off the set, protesting pay, working conditions, and safety issues. They hired unqualified people to replace them, and this was the result.

I was talking to a friend who works in the industry. He said, from what little he read, it was a folly of mistakes.

According to him, there is no time an actual bullet should ever be on set. Apparently, the armorer or prop master wasn't on set at the time, and the AD handed Baldwin the gun and said "cold round."

I'm not entirely clear on what "hot round" and "cold round" means. Calling it an actual bullet sounds a little premature to me. Sounds like the crew was not union people, so I'd guess the armorer wasn't union either. As I understand, the training and testing to be a union armorer is intense. He told me that, when there are prop guns on set, it's super regulated, which I'm guessing it wasn't this time. A major mistake is knowing the AD handed him the gun, when it should be the armorer or the prop master handing over the gun.

Someone is going to get in a lot of trouble.

Gary Paulsen, author of YA wilderness fiction, died on Oct 13th at 82.

The Hatchet was required reading when I was in school. Kind of recall enjoying that one. By all accounts, he's a fascinating person.

Head armorer is only 24 years old, seems like she got the job because her father was a well-known, experienced armorer. Hollywood nepotism for the loss.

I'm also wondering why there were any bullets on the set, period. Or honestly, why there even need to be real guns. There are replicas that would look real enough.

Found this Reddit thread:

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comm..._weapon_by_an/

A lot of interesting discussion. Some of the responses read like legit movie workers to me.

On theory is they took the guns out to shoot during downtime, so that's how a real bullet could have got on set.

As far as why they would use real guns, I'd guess there is no legit difference between a real and fake gun if both can shoot projectiles. I would also guess a gun that can arguably shoot a real bullet would have to have a serial number per federal law, so it's easier to use a real gun. That's me doing my own speculation.

RR, that is true.

It's gross because this situation is being used to score political points and social media credit. Like all stories, details need to come out.
