Entertainers as charismatic as Rowdy Roddy Piper don't come along very often, and I don't even like/follow pro wrestling.

RIP Melvin ( Mel ) Farr. Former All American half back for UCLA passed away at 70 yesterday in his home. Drafted in the first round of the 1967 NFL draft, Mel had a stellar career with the Detroit Lions being named offensive rookie of the year in 1967. After six years in the league he retired to open up a Ford Dealership in Oak Park, Michigan. Also sang back up on Marvin Gaye's song, " What's going on."

I remember Mel Farr very well. I had his football card. Didn't he have a brother that played too?

edit: looks like his brother Miller also played, but I don't remember him.

Wow, turns out Miller Farr was great. Possibly better than Mel. He's on the All-Time All-AFL second team. Cornerback for the Chargers and Oilers.

Jesus, Frank Gifford died? I also always liked him. Great great player and then fine announcer for years. He was always a man of his time. He came from dirt-poor roots in Oklahoma iirc, but exemplified class. I read his book on the famous Colts-Giants 58 championship game. Just seemed like a real good decent guy, the way he talk about how pro football was back than.

I kinda hated to see him mixed up with all the nonsense of his later years.

Looks like Gifford was born and raised in Bakersfield, CA. I think his dad was a classic Okie and I misremembered that. Still humble roots obv.

As far as I am concerned, Frank Gifford set the gold standard for play by play on Monday Night Football. It was his consistency that allowed broadcasters like Howard Cosell and Dandy Don Meredith to make any game very entertaining for the average viewer. Kind of ironic how both Frank and O.J. starred at USC and also shared duties on MNL. Mr.Simpson was a color commentator during the last three years of Franks tenure on MNL.

I have to disagree. I've been watching MNF since Keith Jackson handled the play-by-play, and in my mind there is absolutely no comparison between the job Al Michaels did and that of Frank Gifford. In fact, there was a reason that Michaels replaced Gifford as play-by-play in the mid-80s, and that was because ABC recognized that Al was vastly superior at those duties.

As an aside, exactly what is ironic about Gifford and O.J. both starring at USC and then being on MNF? It was certainly a coincidence, but I fail to see any irony.

The weird thing is on Saturday I had an argument with my uncle about when Frank Gifford would die. He was certain it would be May 8th 2019, and I thought it would be sometime in the winter of 2016-2017. Turns out we were both wrong. RIP.

I have nothing against Michaels, but he didn't have to deal with Cosell and Meredith. Gifford was an ex-jock who walked the tightrope, got the job done, and inserted his own jabs deftly in a completely deadpan manner. Michaels was a pro announcer who did a good workmanlike job.

I just found this old post of mine from 5 months ago. Sad to see that generation dying off. They built the NFL into what it is now; it was all baseball back then. Obviously I'm joking there, Gifford was plenty tough. All those guys were.

I've never been there but my dad said he met a guy from Bakersfield once who told him "The toothbrush was invented in Bakersfield." "Oh yeah?" "Yeah. If it was invented anywhere else it would have been called a teethbrush."

Dawkins was pretty good in his day, might have benefited by spending a few years in college like Shaq did instead of going straight to the pros. Always seemed like a good guy in interviews.
